New poster, longtime lurker. Sorry if TLDR

I think the most important stat from last years team is 1,035 Defensive Plays. Good for #126 in the country and last in the SEC. To me, that number has to come down if this team is going to be successful this year. But how the hell would we do that?

It's been a year so I'm a little fuzzy on the details but it felt like we didn't sustain any drives last year. I remember a ton of explosive plays but no methodical drives. My impression was that, while we scored a bunch of points, we didn't really control the pace of the game.

After doing what any reasonable person with the internet should do and looking it up. Hypothesis proven!

#77 in 3rd Down Conversions (38.9%)
#58 in 3rd Down Defense (38.86%)
#107 in Completion Pct. (54.4%) YIKES!!!
#58 in Penalty Yards/Game (52.7)

So yeah, the defense needed to do a better job of getting off the field but a 60% passer at QB probably does the most to improve our defense this year. Here's hoping Starkel is that guy.

In today's game even 60% isn't too crazy. The '16 defense didn't do themselves any favors late in the season, but they certainly weren't getting help from the O.

I'd like to have a rational conversation about football with you I really would but I'm still crying on the inside from how we finished last year

Don't have any stats to back it up, just what I remember watching and the offense definitely didn't help out the defense (who had their own problems). We'd run two crap, Mickey Mouse bullsh** plays that wouldn't work and faced way too many third downs, anybody have an actual stat on that? And as you can see from your numbers we weren't very good at converting them. Offense can't sustain drives and usually only scored from big plays/quick drives = big problem for defense unless you have the depth. And we don't.

Maybe it is as simple as everyone keeps saying, a fast paced spread offense won't work well in a defense driven league like the SEC. sure even Alabama moved to a more uptempo offense this year, but they've got the talent & coaching to do it, we don't (or at least don't have the coaching to develop the talent, our recruiting hasn't been exactly bad).

We were a big play offense that couldn't consistently move the chains in small chunks. This was compounded by he fact that we run a no huddle most of the time. So what typically happened was we either went three and out in a minute or scored quickly, neither of which helped our defense.

Got any stats on how we ranked in 3 & outs last year? The way things seem and how they actually are are often different. Would be interested to know.

Looks like we were #80 in the country in 3&outs (22.28% of possessions). 31.5% if you throw in any possession that ended in 3 or fewer plays (end of half, turnovers, etc.). For reference, "good" (top 30) would be about 18%.

Some great info in this thread. I would wager a large factor in this is Knight's inaccuracy.

I guess the question becomes would you rather have a 55% passer who creates conflict for the defense in the run game or a 62% passer who really isn't a run threat now that we understand the effects of low completion percentage in this offense. No coincidence, I get the sense that this is the Mond/Starkle decision we are really having to make.

In this offense: 62% passer.

This.

Because not only was he inaccurate in the plays called, but the lame-arse plays that were being called were being called because he was inaccurate, so it was a compounding thing.

Knight's a great guy, I appreciate him playing for us, but he's not a great passer, and this is a passing offense.
