I know it wont happen but could you imagine if Dooley landed there somehow? Even if it were just as a position coach.
On a bit more serious note, I always liked MR but disliked UGA. I wont say that I hated them, just a strong dislike. I think they will regret this at some point. I wish nothing but the best for MR.

They and LSU are stupid in my opinion. So is mizzou but that is for a completely different reason. I hope UGA suffers for this.

For discussion sake, do you not think that CMR way underachieved given his resources? Is 15 years not enough?

He had a better record in his 15 years than Vince had in his first 15 years.

Vince won games that mattered. What's the last big win that Richt had? I've seen many, many quotes from SEC fans lambasting UGA for our underachieving HC. Now we're foolish for firing him. I like the move and I think that Smart will be more successful than Richt.

I think it's fair to say he underachieved, but to fire him and then hire an unknown is silly to me. Smart might kill it, but UGA is taking a pretty big chance with him. The recruiting thing is overblown because anyone would recruit well there and you can only keep so many instate (UGAs argument for years and it's true). Him surrounding himself with proven assistants is key.

Sucks because I like UGA. I typically pull for them in their games, and prefer them over any other East team.

Firing Richt is going to hurt them, I think. If 9-3 isn't good enough...

I love Vince. He's a great guy, but did he ever win anything big without Herschel?

Won 6 SECC's. Beat Bama (Bear) his first year and Tech (Bobby Dodd) his first 3 years running. When he retired, he was 2nd only to Bear lifetime in the SEC. Dooley rarely lost games he was supposed to win, and often won games he wasn't.

Just because other schools have made unsuccessful hires, doesn't mean this one will be. I think Smart is a really good hire for UGA.

You had better hope he wins.. Otherwise, you could end up like we have been the last half decade.

The bar is obviously 10 wins since 9 isn't good enough

Vince had 2 SEC championships in his first 5 years. Shared another one in year 13.

Richt had 2 championships in his first five years as well. Won another 4 divisional titles (03, 07, 11, & 12).

He definitely underachieved considering the talent UGA can and does bring in, but why hire a guy who has never been a HC? Hell, his title might be DC, but everyone knows that's Saban's defense.

UGA was easily the best available job; they had their pick of the litter, and the AD underachieved harder than Richt ever did.

In his first year, Richt beat the '01 UT team that was a machine (UGA was also 1-9 against UT in the previous 10 meetings). Completely dismantled Saban in '04 LSU.

Bowl records:
Vince 8-10-2; 1-4 in Sugar (4-7, 0-2 in Sugar in his first 15 yrs)
Richt 9-5; 2-1 in Sugar

Vince also played for a Natty in 1976 with....

....RAY Fing GOFF as his QB 9actually, we were on a 2 QB system that year)

Mark Richt was essentially playing for the Natty in '12. They would've raped Notre Dame too.

This. I think they were fine in firing him but hiring Kirby is a gamble for sure. It might workout well, but I can say as an opposing fan that I'm certainly not afraid of the hire

Exactly. Although I don't think UGA will ever be really bad like a lot of teams who frick up a hire.
