@patrickbrownTFP: Butch said freshman kicker Aaron Medley has been 'pretty consistent' aside from one practice.

@Volquest_Paul: Butch again says the QBs aren't accurate enough at this point.

@Volquest_Paul: Butch said some players are starting to separate themselves and some are starting to fall behind.

@patrickbrownTFP: Butch says freshman DE Derek Barnett has had 'tremendous' camp and has 'elevated' the defensive line play.

@Volquest_Paul: Butch also mentions Elliot Berry is showing up a good bit in practice.

According to VQ, we have flipped 66 roster spots since spring of 2013 :processing:

That number is staggering. I hate Dooley more and more...

Agreed. I would probably try to strangle Dooley if I ever bumped into him

quote:

The first-team offense's two turns, with Justin Worley at quarterback, ended in a fourth-down incompletion and an interception. On the first series, Pig Howard had a short pass go through his hands, and linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin made a nice open-field tackle on tailback Marlin Lane before a miscommunication on fourth down saw Worley throw deep to a spot devoid of any receivers.

Worley started his second series with two completions, but freshman cornerback Emmanuel Moseley had good coverage deep on receiver Marquez North and came down with a tough catch on Worley's underthrown pass to end the series.

"Put the ball where one guy can catch it!" Vols coach Butch Jones barked at his senior quarterback.

Good lord...

-Peterman was the most effective QB in red zone drill. He threw 4 TDs while Worley threw 1 TD and three interceptions. Dobbs threw 2 TDs.

Butch Jones spiced up a kickoff-return drill by shouting, “Come on, Eric Berry. Come on Eric.” Realizing his mistake, the head man quickly recovered and shouted: “Evan Berry, I wish you were Eric Berry!”

I haven't gotten to catch up on how practice went today but I keep hearing about Moseley making plays on proven guys like North! If he's already giving North fits then Emmanuel Moseley may be as good right now as Cam Sutton with the potential to be even better given Moseley's outrageous level of speed.

Playing the loud rap music during the entire practice period is kinda obnoxious. But it probably helps with communication and getting used to game environments. Smart.

Listening to Ainge on the way to work this morning and the guy is in love with Jalen Hurd. Mentioned that we haven't had a running back with the ability to break the game open like Jalen in years.

Also, he mentioned that the QB play has been much better then what's circulating through out the media. It's not where it needs to be, but it's better than at any point last year. He basically said Butch is pushing these guys to the limit and then some trying to create competition amongst the group so they can all take the next step. He's down playing the good throws and reads because that's expected. And he's highlighting the mistakes and making sure everyone knows about them so they don't keep repeating them.

From VQ, the freshmen who are stepping up to the plate are -- DE: Hendrix and Barnett DT: Mixon DB: Mosley and TK Jr. WR: Malone and Wharton TE: Ethan Wolf is killing it RB: Hurd with some good things on D.Scott as well. OL: Thomas, whose up from 290lb. To 315 and looking to add to that by kick off.

I've been hoping that this is the case because I haven't liked what I've read about the QBs so far. If Hurd can be the gamebreaker that we all think he can, that will help take the pressure off of the QB even more (not to mention our vastly upgraded WRs).

I like it. I really hope TKJr is in the starting lineup by the Georgia game. It's painfully obvious in drills that he's better than McNeil and Swafgord. He looks like our best tackling DB already too.

Ainge also gave a lot of praise to Maggitt this morning. He said he's physically imposing and extremely intellectual with game situations going into his RS JR year. After watching some practice highlights and seeing how he explodes off the line, I think him and Vereen are going to provide the first decent pass rush we've had in several years.

That aligns with what Hubbs wrote here about the QBs:

quote:

There's been plenty said about the quarterbacks this week and most of it hasn't been positive. The truth is that the quarterbacks didn't start off the way this coaching staff had hoped or expected and they certainly still aren't there. However, they have made some strides and as Jones has said, the quarterbacks don't have to be game ready today. But don't look for the head coach to let up or offer many compliments on his signal callers. -Hubbs

quote:

Jones rode defensive back/linebacker Elliott Berry throughout practice. He told the freshman he would remove the "B" from the back of his jersey after he adjudged Berry to loaf to a drill and proceeded to refer to him as "Elliot Erry" throughout practice. This after Jones singled out Berry for his performance following Thursday's practice.

quote:

Josh Dobbs was sharp on his short throws, including an on-target slant to redshirt freshman Ryan Jenkins and ball through a tight window to Johnson.

Nathan Peterman hit on a pair of deep passes. He hit Pearson in stride down the sideline after catching safety Devaun Swafford peeking into the flat. Peterman then hit walk-on Virginia transfer Adrian Gamble in stride between a couple of defenders on a post pattern.

Where was Justin Worley, you ask? He was handing off during a drill on the defensive field on what may have been a maintenance day for the senior.

From tonights scrimmage:

-Butch said Barnett continues to show up and is creating a role. Also said Hurd continues to get better, better and better.

-Butch: Barnett is still showing out. He's earned a role on this team.

-Butch: "Marked improvement" in QB play today. Made routine plays. That's a start.

-Butch said he saw a better performance from the QBs. Not as many big plays, though.

-Butch: Offense had a 14-play, 98-yard drive that ended with a fumble. Defense kept clawing a made a play.

-Butch: We grew up and took some steps today. It was better. Still lots to fix, but this was
better.

-Butch: Only one INT today. On a tipped ball. Great play on back end.

-Jones: We held back A.J. Johnson because it was a chance to get our other linebackers some playing time. Really pleased with Dillon Bates.

-Jones: We'll have Derrell Scott back full-go Monday.

-Butch: 90-plus plays tonight.

-Worley: The offensive line played well.

-Worley: I missed a few throws that I would have liked to have back, but I thought I managed the offense pretty well overall.

-Worley: The defense started throwing some "odd," three-down-lineman looks at us tonight.

-Randolph: We're getting to the ball faster on defense.

-Randolph with the only INT of the scrimmage

-Nate Peterman said to really be progressing

I'm starting to get an eerie feeling that Peterman is going to be the guy.
