Coaching Changes

It looks like there is going to be a lot of movement here. I think Mahoney and Martinez are gone for sure with more possible.
I am seeing names like Helfrich, Hoke, and Fair being thrown around. I would think it will be hard to pull good coaches with Butch coaching for his job next season. Anybody have some nugs? Any coaches you want to land?
Rock Gullickson to SC is a good start.

I have no inside information at all but Hoke or Helfrich seem like pipe dreams by themselves let alone getting both
I'll be shocked if we get either

Agree. Butch's old biology teacher at Saugatuck High School will become the OC.

Not to be a dick, but with Butch being on uncertain terms it's going to be hard to pull in those types of coaches.

You're right, we just choose to ignore that fact

Hubbs this morning on potential changes
quote:
On the coaching front, we again don't expect any moment from Butch Jones on his staff until after the bowl game. We don't believe there's been any dialogue with Jones and former Oregon head coach Mark Helfrich. And, according to multiple people we spoke with on Wednesday, we don't think Jones has made any final decisions on his staff although everyone expects some changes. On the defensive side of the ball if there was a change for some reason on the defensive line then we fully expect that former Michigan head coach and Oregon defensive coordinator Brady Hoke would be a very real candidate. Jones has known Hoke for a while and Hoke actually spent time in Knoxville a couple of years ago visiting with Jones and his staff.

If Hoke were to come in, does Rutger flip from Oregon to VOLS?

Yeah, I acknowledged that in the post.

I am guessing that Stripling could be moving on. Does Hoke have a good reputation as a dline coach?

Butch and Hoke. Two underachieving blowhards. That'll fix it

Would like to see Joe Tumpkin from Colorado replace Martinez. Colorado had the 13th ranked pass defense in the nation. Watched them play a few games this season and the secondary was always balling out. He also coached at Central Michigan before that so that could be a connection between him and Butch. Personally though, I wish Butch would just give Shoop total control of the defense and let him make his own hires. Let your coaches coach.

I'm honestly surprised Shoop didn't demand this when he agreed to come, it's should absolutely be the case now

Not saying it is going to turn the program around. I think there is a very good chance Butch will be gone after next season one way or another. I would just like some good coaches that can develop players for whoever takes over. OL,DB, and LB have been poorly developed.
Might as well find something to get excited about so the that the offseason/next season isn't miserable.

I genuinely think Helfrich/Hoke are a real possibility. If that happens and Mahoney/Martinez are replaced then I think we could see some serious improvement this offseason.

That's a lot of pink slips in one room

1: Helfrich ain't comin
2: while it would appear from the outset to many as a sexy hire, I'm not convinced he doesn't suck and would end up being very underwhelming with Butch as opposed to Chip fricking Kelly.
Maybe I'm just a battered Vol fan that has been following UT on a personal and emotional level since I was 9 during the 2001 season; but I've seen this story over and over with this program since the 2001 seccg and it always ends the same. We are stuck in purgatory. Everyone go ahead and preorder your official Nike preseason #hashtag cliche shirt with a image of Butch kneeling like Neyland on it.
The Big Orange Giant isn't reawakening until our University gets serious about football and put serious people in charge in approiate roles. We don't even have a fricking AD and haven't had one for 5 fricking months since Roll Tide Dave found out he was done. Since then his primary focus has been devoted to a nonprofit he is starting for the next phase of his life. Meanwhile our top ten potential football program was running amock on the inside like an episode of Ballers and we gave up a couple of miles literally in rushing to the Titans that are Vanderbilt, Missouri and Kentucky. Oh yea a HS senior beat us too.

I wish I could disagree with at least some of that

Brice is the one who has been dropping that info. so it's definitely a real possibility. Helfrich would have a field day with JG and is even more valuable as a QB coach than as an OC although I suspect that Debo and Helf would fill a Co-OC role with Debo helping on the line and with game planning (which he's really good at) and Helfrich taking on more in-game/playcalling while coaching QBs.
Brice was also the one who dropped Shoop's name when no one thought we'd get him. If nothing else both Helfrich and Hoke are legit possibilities (he wouldn't drop their names like he has otherwise).
I'm less excited about Hoke because Strip is a damn fine DL coach but he's also pretty old and may simply be ready to retire.
EDIT: Mahoney's contract wasn't renewed so he's very likely been gone for a while.
