KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — When Tennessee hired John Currie as its athletic director Feb. 28, replacing Dave Hart, uncertainty lingered over the department.

The uncertainty was due to a long overdue and continuously delayed search process that lasted months.

Phillip Fulmer, former UT player, assistant coach and national championship and Hall of Fame head coach, was in the mix to land the job.

Even Fulmer’s former offensive coordinator, David Cutcliffe, shared his thoughts on the handling of the search and endorsed his former boss. The current Duke head coach even asked for the Tennessee family to come together.

When Fulmer didn’t get the job, alumni and fans wondered why it went to someone else in a long, drawn-out search.

Fulmer played the political side of throwing his name in the mix for the job by attending Lady Vol and men’s basketball games. But looking back on it, it’s evident he mostly attended the games out of the love he has for the university.

Hiring Currie, who was Kansas State’s AD, did not seem like the proper fit to many. Currie was returning to Tennessee, where he worked under then-athletics director Mike Hamilton – who fired Fulmer as head coach and began the downward spiral of Volunteer athletics in the past ten years.

But on June 20, perhaps the healing began as Fulmer was named as the special advisor to the president for community, athletics and university relations.

Fulmer will serve as an ambassador for the University system at community and athletics events, support the intercollegiate athletic programs at UT campuses in Knoxville, Chattanooga and Martin, and work with UT government relations and alumni affairs leadership to advocate for the statewide system with elected officials and UT alumni.

The hiring is a win-win for the UT and the athletic department.

Bad blood for a long period of time could have been the outcome from Fulmer not getting the AD position, but once again, he handled a situation that did not go his way with class, much like his departure as head coach.

Credit Currie and others for acknowledging Fulmer’s importance to the UT and athletics and to welcome the Hall-of-Famer back, something that needed to take place, especially after how his firing was handled in 2008.

“As a native Tennessean who has given his all for the Vols throughout his life, both as a student-athlete on the field and during a Hall of Fame coaching career leading our program to its most dominant and successful era in modern history, Coach Fulmer is a perfect ambassador for our University and athletics program,” Currie said.

“I’ve appreciated and enjoyed numerous visits with coach Fulmer since I returned to Knoxville, and I am honored to work with him in support of President (Joe) DiPietro and Chancellor (Beverly) Davenport as we serve the University of Tennessee, our students and student-athletes.”

The coming together for Fulmer, Currie and UT months after the AD search, is a sign to positive things to come for an athletics program that has been in shambles since Hamilton played politics in Fulmer’s departure.

According to a Gridiron Now report, Fulmer got a call from a search committee member late in the search process, leading him to believe that he had the job. Also, not all search committee members knew Currie played a role in having Fulmer fired in 2008 or how that strained their relationship. Gridiron Now wrote that their relationship led Fulmer to push for the AD so that Currie would not get it.

But any animosity appears to be in the rear-view mirror and should lead to a turning point in getting Tennessee athletics competing for championships in all sports, like they were when Fulmer was head coach and Currie worked at UT in his first stint, eventually rising to Executive Associate AD.

Fulmer even addressed the issue in his press conference when being named to his new position. “I have absolutely no animosity for not being named athletic director,” he said. “I simply felt compelled to try for that position because of my love and passion for the university.”

Why do you say this? I may be out of touch with current state of affairs, but it seems like they got the win-win by picking the younger, business-savvy Currie for the AD position and still getting the Pumpkin King to sign back on as the face of VOLS athletics. You have the potential of long-term stability with Currie while still taking advantage of the benefits of having Fulmer involved for as long as he is willing to be.

Edit: spelling is cool...

Fulmer hates Currie. He's pretty much the guy that led the charge to get the Krispy Kreme King fired. So having them both here again is definitely weird.

Maybe no animosity for missing out on AD, but he still fricking hates Currie.

It's a huge coup to be able to bring Fulmer back around the AD & University. HOF coach who has won at the highest level and knows what it takes to get there. It's clear that he still despises Currie based off the video interview that I just watched, but I don't see that as an obstacle to him helping the University in the capacity that he was brought on. It's easy to see that the man is still infatuated with his alma mater and wants us to get back to where we were.

If I'm being honest I am very impressed with what Currie has done in the short amount of time that he's been here. You can tell that he isn't in love with fulmer either, but he is committed to making decisions that are going to help UT get back to winning at a high level.

I read an article in which Fulmer said that Butch Jones has done a good job of rebuilding Tennessee from the mess that he inherited from Dooley/Kiffin, but that he has told Butch that this program is still not where it needs to be and that he still needs to improve. Fulmer being brutally honest with Butch brought a tremendous smile to my face.

Exactly. Currie and Fulmer don't get along. Fine. Nevertheless, Fulmer loves the VOLS more than he hates Currie and seems willing to reinvest himself into the university. I hope he can serve as a mentor to Butch and get him over the hump, but if not, he should be a strong advocate for the football program and athletics in general.

I guess I'm just not really sure what we think might be going on.

This. The sweetness and light doesn't make any sense.

But it still seems like a good thing.

Butch needs to have no illusions about where he stands. But will he micromanage the situation well, or badly?

Maybe somebody said to Currie, "Thanks to your drive to get rid of Coach Fulmer, UT had back to back losing seasons for the first time since 1910-1911."

Currie and Fulmer despise one another.

Fulmer has no pull in this position and it is privately funded.

It was done to stroke Fulmer's ego.

Smart move by Currie imo.

We should've hired fulmer as AD (mostly to be a figure-head and raise money) and had Currie be his #2 (and handle most actual AD duties) with a promise of having the job The when Fulmer departs and that's all there is to it

Of course Currie might not have agreed to that at which point I understand but choose Fulmer

Fulmer once again proves he absolutely bleeds orange and wish one day someone could say I have the same dedication and passion to our program that he does even though you could say it's given him plenty of reason to be resentful

Go Vols

As I suspected from the moment I read about it, a totally symbolic and inconsequential position just for appearances

That seems intangible depending how cannily he plays it.

The last thing the administration would want is for Phat Phil to resign and say they are all clueless and uncommitted.

Fulmer's pay out if I read right is more than Currie's.

Love me some Smokey Mountains.

GATLINBURG, Tenn. — Tennessee football hall of famer Phillip Fulmer has complete confidence current Vols coach Butch Jones knows how to handle his quarterback situation.

Fulmer, conducting his youth camp at Rocky Top Sports World last week, spoke exclusively with SEC Country about Tennessee’s ongoing quarterbacks battle.

“Butch will handle that fine,” said Fulmer, a confidant of Jones. “You’ve got a guy that can throw it and seems more consistent (Quinten Dormady), and another guy that is very talented and can throw it, too (Jarrett Guarantano).

“It (two-quarterback system) is probably not preferable, to be honest,” Fulmer said. “But that (2004 season) was one of the years we made it work.”

Ainge led the 2004 SEC East Division champion Vols with 1,452 yards passing, 17 touchdowns and 9 interceptions before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury the ninth game of the season against Notre Dame.

Schaeffer, who suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in the eighth game of the season against South Carolina, passed for 302 yards and rushed for 66.”

As long as Coach Fulmer has access to the media he is a force. Gotta be.

Brent Schaeffer as I recall transferred to Ole Miss after he instituted a fight at a dorm. Coach Fulmer told him that was his best option.

"Schaeffer eventually did arrive and started all 12 games and completed 115-of-244 passes (47.1%) for 1,442 yards, nine touchdowns, 10 interceptions and a passer rating of 100.75."

Did Shaffer not rush for more than 66 yards total while here?

And I think he's departure was after a couple of issues including a pool hall incident but that may have been James Banks I can't remember

Either way never felt Schaffer met his full potential which was a shame

Schaeffer fumbled at least once against UF in 2004. He was a very exciting Michael Vick sort of player. I do recall that CPF told him he might do better elsewhere. Coach Ogeron was delighted to get him at Ole Miss. But then he threw 10 INTs and 9 TD's. So CPF was right about that.

Why was that an issue? Wouldn't a "please tell how great you think Coach Jones is," work better?

I think they'd rather him direct his ire at Jones than the administration

Which is who actually gave him the money
