He is one of their best recruiters and was in charge of recruiting Louisiana for them.

(stolen from LSU RB)

This could be bad for TAMU as he was a top notch recruiter and the DB coach for their very young but talented DBs. Or it could be very good if they get someone that comes in and makes that defense way better.

Timing is good for LSU as they were still recruiting our Louisiana kids really hard.

He was also co-DC. It's not great timing for recruiting, but I'm excited to see who we can bring in to help the defense.

Was he forced out? Strange for a co-DC at a SEC school to leave for Boise St.

I honestly don't know. I do know that a lot of additional money in assistant coach salary was recently approved. Yates is DC at Boise, not the understudy. And it's his alma mater. Maybe Sumlin tried really hard to keep him, maybe he didn't.

I liked him as our coach, and he was definitely a strong recruiter. Bad timing, but I'm interested to see who we fill the position with. I trust Sumlin to make a strong hire.

Didn't think they had any defensive coaches

He was a good recruiter but not one of our best. The Top 3 are easily McKinney, Beaty, and Price. Sumlin won't hire anyone that isn't at least a good recruiter. Yates was also Co-DC really in name only, it is Snyder's defense. I get the feeling that Sumlin didn't try very hard to keep him and it seemed like Yates was more comfortable back home in Boise. Good luck to him.

A&M has money to pay (Yates made nearly 400k) and there are at least 2 really good candidates out there to be had that would be considered an upgrade (Ron Cooper and Duane Akina).

Well you are in the minority with that opinion among your own fan base.

Really? I've never heard Yates listed as a better recruiter than any of those 3. McKinney was RC last year before getting promoted. Beaty is the current RC and is a maniac. Price has done a great job and is a big reason we have brought in some of the ridiculous talent we have on the DL in the '13, 14, and '15 Classes.

Yates has gotten us in the conversation with a lot of Louisiana guys but how many has he closed? 2014 is one of the best years for DB's in Texas and yet we are basically out of it at the end for the consensus Top 2 (Adams and Brown). He's done well but he's replaceable. Yates got his reputation for taking 2 and 3 Star guys at Boise and make them NFL players, haven't seen that yet at A&M. Maybe he could get there but it wasn't obvious.

I'd have been fine with him staying but he isn't someone I am losing sleep over. Nick Harvey has already said it doesn't really affect him.

I'd agree with Aggressor. I don't think it is a knock on Yates as much as a testament to how good the other 3 are at recruiting. The timing is not good, but I've got faith in the Cobra to make a great hire

Price was on Tuberville's staff at auburn for 10 years, and he was never known as a strong recruiter... certainly adequate, and did a good job with our DEs.

That may be true, but if so, he has certainly improved in that regard. Just check out our d-line class last year and the one we have coming in this year. He has knocked it out of the park for us.

Coaches don't recruit their position they recruit an area.

I understand that and probably should have worded my answer better. Whenever we have had a d lineman commit, they always talk about Coach Price and how instrumental he was in getting them to commit to A&M. He may not start out as the lead recruiter, but he is absolutely involved in the recruiting process of any d lineman and has been crucial in every one of our commitments at the position.
