I know everyone has their preferences, biases and other concerns with each recruiting site. What I want this thread to be is a legitimate discussion of the merits and weaknesses of each service. I was going over each sites rankings and here they are for those of you who don't know how to work the google on the internet machine:

ESPN
RIVALS
SCOUT
247

I know the composite rules all, but the reality is that each of those effect the composite in a substantial way (depending on 247's formula, but it's roughly a ~25% share) so they are worth discussing.

Here's something to consider to get the ball rolling:
I think these sites should put more emphasis on their game tape (not highlights, because that is just a snapshot of their peak). The All-America games are great because of the high talent around them, but they are also hampered by adapting to an offense/defense in a week as opposed to the system they have grown accustomed to over the course of years. Being efficient in a one week system is great, but proving that you can be an integral cog in a system for years is even more important, at least to my untrained eye.

I'm interested to see how everyone feels about this.

As a side note, I find myself liking ESPN's ranking more so this year than in the past.

Eh, I'm not so sure I agree with you there. They are always behind the ball on knowing where a recruit is going, i.e. they called Ole Miss the "dark horse" in Deontay Anderson's recruitment in the last month.

They don't have as many guys scouting players and tape as Rivals and 247. Personally, when it comes to scout and ranking, I'd say it goes Rivals/247, then a step down is Scout then a couple steps down is ESPN. Unfortunately, ESPN is the only one that matters as perception is reality.

Rivals should be kicked out the composite. Their rankings are an embarrassment.

I know LSU fans are up in arms over the drops in some of our commits/targets, but do you have a reason for that?

It's a Bama conspiracy.

Only rivals has Bama outside of the top 10, so it's really not, all of the rankings are shite in their own way. There's typically not a huge difference between the top 50 or so players in the country. Each site is going to rate them differently so they don't look like they're piggybacking off another site. If a guy they have rated at 10 and another service has rated at 55, it makes them look better. They have to take chances like that.

At the end of the day, a kid is the same ball player whether he has 3 or 5 stars next to his name. Recruiting rankings are like preseason rankings, they're a decent indicator of perceived talent but in the end they don't mean a damn thing

I think they're far from perfect but their rankings, from what I can tell seem to be kind of a happy medium between the sites. I agree that their pure coverage is subpar compared to the other sites, but their rankings don't seem terrible.

I also tend to look at them more since, on signing day, that's all anyone is really going to see from an exposure standpoint.

Exactly. The one ranking that truly matters is ESPN's because everyone is tuning into ESPNU on Signing Day. That may change next year now that CBS has acquired 247. CBS Sports should do all day coverage like ESPNU does but I doubt that'd be for another year.

I agree, but I doubt it'll happen. ESPN has already said they really don't make much money with recruiting stuff so I doubt a network that doesn't have sports as a priority is going to roll with that.

ESPN is every bit as good as the other services, but the people who pay for Rivals, Scout, etc have a hard time accepting that

I like whichever one has my teams' commits ranked the highest.

I come to Tennessee Jed for all my recruiting news. I get so excited every time I see he has a player on his "flip watch!"

That may be because they haven't made much of a commitment to it. CBS acquired 247 for almost $200 million if I remember correctly. I'll bet they start doing more to incorporate some 247 stuff on the network, rather than just all online and on podcasts. Hell, ESPN is rolling out more money to cover video game competitions than they are recruiting, a questionable move.

The fact that they drop a guy like rashard Lawrence from a 5* to not even in the top 100 is insane yet they rank a guy like Christmas-Giles in the top 100 and I think he only had 5 sacks his senior year. They are obviously biased to army all American players as well. It really a joke how far off their ranking are compared to other sites.

I apologize if I've hurt your feelings at some point. I try my best to remain civil across all boards.

I think ESPN's rankings are normally terrible. They seem to have the most players over ranked to me.

This. ESPN is by far the worst. They should probably just license the rights to use 247/Rivals.

1. 247/Rivals
2. Scout
3. ESPN

People in this thread aren't going to like that either cause 247 dropped a bunch of LSU commits in their rankings as well... I think Fowler and Logan are the only top 200 guys for them that actually moved up.
