But LSU fans told me that Hootie would project more as a linebacker in your system. Why are you listing safeties?

LSU fans saw Hootie's measurables and knowing Chavis' scheme and history started clamoring linebacker.

LSU coaches saw Hootie's film, where he avoids contact at all cost, and saw a guy who under no circumstances will ever play linebacker.

That's why I'm listing safeties.

Dillon Bates, OLB (Tennessee): "He's a great kid, but he just can't play at the SEC level. He doesn't move at the same speed as guys that are playing at that level."

Bates is one of the most athletic linebackers in the country. At the Opening last summer, he posted the 2nd highest SPARQ rating by a LB and 11th highest overall. If he doesn't pan out at the next level, it won't be because he's slow.

Speed doesn't always translate once the pads come on. Not saying this is the case though.

So no, we couldn't have used Hootie, as signing 4-5 safeties in the same class would be overkill.

Where did you get 4-5 from? You've listed two and I know you guys have Adams as well.. Y'all have no depth at safety.

There's a reason LSU didn't make a move on him after he decommitted from Bama.

Did he not have an offer?

1. Adams
2. Battle
3. Voorhies
4. Paris - S/CB

Hootie would be 5. So yes, signing Hootie would be akin to signing 4-5 safeties, depending on how you account for Paris, which is overkill.

Ofcourse Hootie had an offer, it's important to try to keep highly ranked kids at home. Also well documented that LSU never reached out to him after he decommitted from Bama. Compare to Cam Robinson, who LSU continued to recruit post-Bama commitment. There was no crying over spilt milk with Hootie.

ETA - gismap also mentioned Gage at Safety who is another DB. I tend to count Gage as a CB and Paris as a S. They could both be Safeties. They could both be CBs.
