Back in the day, I faintly remember recruiting magazines coming out before and after signing day.

How were players ranked back then? What was a 3/4/5 star before the star rankings were developed?

They were all labeled either D-1 or non D-1. That was the ranking in my hay day.

Parade Magazine (of 'parade all american') began publishing their HS AAs in 1963. As to if they did any formal "rankings", I don't have a clue, but there was at least some type of service like that back then.

I remember some old timers on a UGA board saying that when they were kids (so maybe the 50s or 60s) there was a recruiting hotline you could dial into and some guy would tell you who the hot recruits were at the time lol.

They were ranked by if they rated a K-Car, LeBaron, or Charger.

I didn't know who we signed until the 'Bama magazine recruiting issue was mailed out after NSD.

Those were fun times. It was like "Hey, have y'all seen this #97 Cornelius Bennett guy? He's a monster!"

There was a time when people went to JV games to see the players coming up to varsity the next year.

first time I got onto message boards was 2000 when I was on rivals. I was 15 that year and in 9th grade.

Prior to that, all I had for access was the media guide which came in July and the preseason rags that came out about the same time. I would go to Kmart or Kroger every fricking day as a middle schooler and wait til athlon came out to see where we were ranked.

It's so funny how time changes. Nowadays as adults we couldn't give less of a shite what athlon says, but back in those days that was all I had and I took it as gospel. Simpler times man.

Tom Lemming's word was gospel. When recruiting sites sprung up, it became obvious his reliability was vastly overrated.

Yeah, I've heard people talk about the 900 numbers people would call. That just seems crazy.

I remember the cream of the crop making "parade all american' and "the usa today all usa teams". the 2 magazines I got were the forrest davis and jeff whittaker recruiting mags. davis always did the star system with a 5 max. whittaker had photos and a bigger bio write up. max player being a 10. anything 9.5 and up was pretty much proportionate to a 4+ and up in the davis guide. lindy's and Athlons would just have a top 50 or 100 in their usual summer release. ie- jeff George was #1. another good guide was the Atlanta journal constitution "super southern 100".

Tom Lemming, Max Emfinger, Prepstar, etc and a ton of local publications.

The thing is the services that coaches use haven't really changed much at all.
