Like when he passed over Johnnie Harris, your current HC, to hire McCrae Penson. Or when he passed over Butch, also your current HC, to hire Cannizzaro. He passed over Grantham, who may not have worked, to hire Moorhead who had less experience and certainly didn’t work.
Not knocking the decision to go outside, it’s the right decision more times than not. But when you have an obvious and qualified successor, passing over them to hire someone else’s assistant coach is generally not one of those times.
He got better with time I would argue, on our bill while he learned on the job. But those later hires were also risky PR hires (Leach and Jan’s), if more certain performance hires, because he knew he was running out of tarmac.

The last time a sitting head coach passed away was Randy Walker at Northwestern in 06. They turned to defensive assistant Pat Fitzgerald, who has held the position ever since. They’ve fallen on hard times lately but that ended up being a great move for Northwestern. I think Arnett is the right guy here. Even if it isn’t splashy.
