While the probability is not high it is not impossible
Northwestern is proof a small private school in a sea of big state schools can compete at the highest level. Like Vanderbilt the purple cats had conference titles in the early days of football before vanishing for about 50 years only to resurface in the 1990's and winning 3 B1G conference championships in about 5 years with the one in 1995 landing them in the Rose Bowl.
While it would not happen overnight, if Vandy could string together a few 9-10 win regular seasons they could punch through to the next level and wind up in a SEC CCG. The bigger question is if they could hold it long enough without getting knocked down by a Florida or Georgia. Long term sustained success is by far the more elusive object and that probability would be very low.

That's the problem. They have to catch UF and UG down in the same year.
That's not likely to happen but not unprecedented. How did Arky make it to two SECCGs? No flame. But didn't they catch the West while Bama was down and maybe Auburn was with tatertot?

Yeah, they'll have to get better and need UF and UGA to fall off. I don't see that happening anytime soon.

That is the first step. Winning 9 or 10 in a single year means some of those games were underdog wins. Once you are winning 9 or 10 for 2 or 3 years in a row the underdog role goes away and you become the team with a target on your back. The other position is if you have a team winning 10 games a season the probability of winning 11 or 12 goes up rapidly because whatever you are doing is sustaining wins at that level.

Look only to last season : 9-4 overall and 5-3 in conference :
The lone OOC game was lost late, winning puts you at 10-3
The South Carolina game could have gone Vandy's way, winning puts you at 11-2
Now it is just Florida (close still second half, and not a blowout by Gators) and Georgia (the blowout)

Right now I would put Vandy over Auburn and Tennessee. However, if Butch can right the ship quickly the Vols have the best resources to bounce back with. Auburn is the wait and see. The big issue is nothing is static and changes occur from year to year.
