It doesn't matter if they take a hiatus on the rivalry.
I am speaking from experience as an Arkansas fan.
Our fanbase, even 20 years later, probably still hates Texas as much as any of the SEC rivals, and we were not nearly as obsessed with Texas as A&M is. Our fight song is not about Texas. We didn't have a bonfire revolving around Texas.
Aggies will talk a big game right now, but if they actually don't play Texas anymore, they'll really start to miss the game in about 2-3 years.
The Arkansas/Texas game in Fayetteville in 2004 was the craziest Razorback football atmosphere I've seen other than the Alabama game last year.
Old hatreds die hard.
If A&M does keep Texas on the schedule, then that will, by far, be their biggest rivalry game.
Even if they only play them periodically, the TAMU hatred of Texas will outshine anything they'll find in the SEC for at least the next 20 years.

Well, I think if we keep playing Texas the rivalry will definitely reach a new level when it comes to "hate". It has never been close to the level of the Iron Bowl when it comes to hate. With A&M being an SEC member, and Texas not getting their way, I think that if we play them it will be an even bigger game.
However, A&M has already stated that they definitely want to keep playing Texass. Its up to them if they want to continue playing us. The ball is on their court. They can take their ball and go crying home; that would be fine with me as well.

I think it will be a great rivalry.

There won't be any true rivalry until we win a couple of games, which might take a while, and then the hate will flow ...

The rivalry will be renewed. Neither team will be each other's main rival. With or without playing Texas annually, Texas will be A&M's main rival.
Now the real question, what do LSU fans cook pregame when we play the Aggies? (We can't cook collies.)
1. Do we cook steak? (Is it too late to trade A&M for Texas.)
2. Do we cook soybean burgers? (Agriculture)
3. Do we cook chicken?
No clear cut winner.
FWIW, the Oregon game was the best game LSU ever scheduled yet. Jalapeno and cream cheese stuffed duck breast wrapped in bacon was a great tailgate.

I doubt it will become the #1 rivalry for LSU; I expect that winning 8 of the first ten matchups will probably diminish the stature of the game among younger LSU fans, and take a little of the luster off of it even for older ones, unless one of the losses costs LSU a championship opportunity.

It will become another big game for LSU. We don't have, nor will we ever have a true number 1 rival. Ask 10 LSU fans, and you get 5 or 6 number 1 rivals. In a matter of 5 years, 6 or 7 of those 10 fans will give a different answer.
True rivalries don't vary that much within a fanbase and don't change based on the circumstances.
