Alabama has and will always strive to be the only program in the state. Offensive Linemen on the men's diving team, over-signing, decades of refusals to play AU, only playing Auburn at their stadium, shutting down a profitable in-state football program... what doesn't make sense about the inevitable future actions by Bama to shut down West Alabama's football team?

Um, ok. I sure am glad an LSU fan cares so much about UWA, which helps many kids who can't make the grades - with many from Mississippi. They also have one of the largest online programs in the state, many for teachers trying to upgrade to a Masters or Education Specialist for more money - or to take classes to renew your license.

You are just ignorant. I'm outta here.

And stop bumping your own thread dude with a word or two. So lame.

Nice try. UWA isn't even in the Bama system.

LSU isn't in the Bama system either but Bryant still paid to have the games in BR played during the day

If any of you honestly believe that Alabama is worried about what the University of West Alabama is doing then you need to find a new hobby because a D2 school in Livingston, Alabama (population 3,500) has zero impact on the success of anything UofA related.

My wife works there and I have been to plenty of football games there. On a Saturday when Bama is playing at home, there's more turn out at the sports bars than there is at Tiger Stadium in Livingston. My old high school's stadium is bigger than UWA's.

Alabama's assistant coaches make more than the UWA head coach so I seriously doubt they are worried with what UWA is doing.

UWA has a good school, and has been a contender in the GCS and D2. They aren't going anywhere anytime soon.

Nah West Alabama is no threat. Their players are like LSU's, they only win and reach their potential once they go on to the NFL. Except Tharold "I'm gonna own this housing project" Simon. He fricking sucks and single handedly lost Seattle the Super Bowl.

I think it used to be called Livingston College or some such.

Former UNA and Temple head coach Bobby Wallace did a stint at West Alabama at the end of his career. We've had some former players start out as assistant coaches there. I think Jermemy Pruitt may have been there as well.

Eventually we're shutting everyone else down. A-day will determine national title.

It started out as a women's college and through the years transitioned mostly to a teacher's college. Then transitioned more into what it is today. It was called Livingston University from the late 50s until the mid 90s when it was changed to University of West Alabama to try and bring attention to it more than just the immediate region.

Located in Livingston there's not much going for it except one bar called The Monkey and 1 or 2 steak houses. Most students head over to Tuscaloosa or Meridian for night life. They're a D2 school in the GSC (Gulf States Conference) whose main rival is the University of North Alabama in Florence.

They've been to the D2 playoffs in the past 2 or 3 years that I know of and have repeated as GSC champs in that time span also.

I think their enrollment is creeping barely over 5,000 but don't hold me to that. But, they've got a decent football team and just started soccer programs within the past couple years too. Basketball is meh, baseball is meh, but they have a good rodeo team which is actually fun to go watch.

Their greek life is way different than that of your SEC schools in that the sororities and fraternities have been integrated for a while and their members tend to break the mold of what you think would be in say Phi Mu at Alabama.

If a kid doesn't want to do Community College or doesn't want to go to a big school like Bama, then UWA would be that college they choose to go to. It has it's problems like most schools and like a lot of schools in the south it has it's own "good 'ol boy network" but overall it's a good school.

Like I said in an earlier post, my wife works there and she also got her masters there so I guess I could be a little biased.

Pretty good roundup. I adjunct teach some online classes there on occasion. Its not Harvard, but its a nice little school that serves its purpose.

The name change from Livingston University in the mid-90s was pushed by the then-president who thought Livingston sounded like a private school. There was a similar push at the University of Montebello, but they chose to keep their private-sounding name.

UWA's mascot is named LUie as an ode to Livingston University. Its a Division II school. They get marginal players that sometimes could make it even in the SEC but have had grade trouble or character flaws. Most of their roster is made up of average players who wanted to keep the dream alive.

As a couple of posters alluded to, UWA's education department is pretty good. They have several online offerings, mostly for teachers who want extra certification or an advanced degree. However, there are little to no standards for getting in, even their graduate programs.
