Auburn fans melting down (see: TTsTowel) is a bit of an over reaction. I actually think Malzahn has the potential to be pretty successful at Auburn. The hire is a bit weird given his involvement with Chizik and the staff, etc. but I think the guy can coach.

Can't wait for Kirby to hit the recruiting trail again. He'll tell kids and their parents that he turned down $3.2 million a year from AU because they're a dumpster fire/going on NCAA probation/have a bunch of skeletons in their closet. Should be a solid sales pitch.

Malzahn is a retread.
He was part of a staff that underperformed most years and excelled one.
He isn't defensive minded--something most Auburn fans were pretty insistent they needed. To Malzahn, defense is just that thing that tries to stop his offense.
He was part of the recruiting classes that seem to have led to the discipline problems that plague Auburn.
His wife's a nut job.
He is a good coach.
He can coach QBs.
His offense is suited to the current personnel.
Take all that together and its an underwhelming hire that feels like just a continuation of the Chizik years.
