I mean...seriously...why were some of these schools' founding administrators so unoriginal?

Not to mention copying stadium nicknames

LSU fighting tigers are named after the 42nd infantry that fought in the war of 1812 as well as the Persian Gulf war.

Razorbacks is random, and apparently happened because our Czech-born coach made a speech after beating LSU wherein he compared the team to fighting like a "wild band of razorbacks" in the victory.
We were the gaybird Cardinals before that. The color stuck.

Because a tiger is much cooler than Alabama's first nickname, the "Thin Red Line." Better than Crimson Tide too.

At least their names are tigers. Alabama crimson tide should have a crimson tide mascot. Even the buckeyes have a buckeye mascot, they didnt cop out to some random animal.

Originality isn't always great..
I didn't research so forgive me if this is off, but aren't you guys named after a really heavy menstrual cycle?
Not one of those "light" days.
But one of those "OMG someone was murdered in my bathroom" days..
Right??
But yes. Tigers are used a lot. Disproportionate to other jungle cats or fierce animals.

I think our Tigers were named after The local militia in Columbia during the Civl War.
"The Fighting Tigers" I believe.
So, not as unoriginal as you thought.
