The No. 20 holds special meaning for him. That's the number worn by his late grandfather, George Patterson, who played for the NBA's Detroit Pistons in the late 1960s.

Got it. Glad his grandpaw didn't wear 54.

Pretty sure there's not a rule against a QB wearing a number in the 20s. Bernie Kosar wore 20, and Doug Flutie wore 22 in college.

You can wear any number you want in college as long as there's no one else on the field (on your team) with the same number as you at the same time.

There are rules for what number you can wear professionally.

Are you sure that you can wear any number you want? On offense, I'm pretty sure eligible receivers can't wear numbers in the 50 - 79 range. That is why if you bring in an O-lineman as a 3rd TE, he has to report to the refs as an eligible receiver. I thought Devin Gardner wearing 98 was ok because eligible receivers can wear numbers in the 90s.

The only rule in College is that Offensive linemen have to be between 50-79.

My bad. You are correct on the offensive lineman thing.
