Thank you, if you sign off on that I am happy!

There is a lot of made up crap on the internet, or even just on the coaching changes board, so I hate to assume.

Seems like the answer is like 0.5A. Its not racist, but it is based on a racist comic strip.

You are really defending your use of that term? Seriously. That's the hill you want to die on? I bet you use the terms "blackmail," "black ball," and "black list" too.

Anyway, after one game, the reporters were commenting and asking questions to coach Paul. He made the comment that they played like a bunch of Chinese Bandits. Now, a very popular comic strip back then was "Terry and the Pirates". He was always in conflict with, what else, Chinese bandits.

Folklore said that Chinese bandits attacked and plundered with that same reckless abandon.

This part I never knew.

Found an old comic strip using Google:

I know this is a troll and you're really not seeking an answer but it was a name coined for our defensive strategy. Chinese bandits were pretty ruthless and swift much like our defense. Ancient legends tend to read that the actual Chinese bandits called themselves LSU Tigers to intimidate their enemies.

More or less.

But it was 1958. A lot of things that were okay then are very much not okay now.

So you have to take it with a salt dome's worth of salt.

I'm sure someday our band will be forced to stop playing the song. I'm also sure most people in the stadium haven't a clue why they play that song or what it means.

They aren't.

It was a thing in 1958.

So kinda like a memento to the national title team? Makes sense.

I wouldn't call you racist. Trollish, perhaps.

And that is fair. I learned years ago if I don't ask LSU fans confrontational questions on here I get ignored instead of answers.

With that said, I appreciate your answer. That is why you are my favorite Tiger, I don't have to code my message for you!

Makes perfect sense.

Chinese people do treasure tiger penis.

Wait a minute...

Yeah I completely get that. Trust me, A&M has plenty of that too (like our retired Rice Yell). I can appreciate historical context.

With that said, I knew there had to be some reason it wasn't used in the modern era too like "blackshirts."

Yes, we pay homage to the legend of the 1958 team every time we play that song. But our defense today is not called the Chinese Bandits any more than the current Aggie defense is called the Wrecking Crew.

I hate how everyone jumped on the "Landshark" bandwagon this year and everyone was calling it some kind of tradition or whatever when it was because some defensive player did it back in like 2009. Probably the dumbest thing I've ever heard of.

I haven't heard the Rice Yell.

Does it go something like this?

"What comes out of a Chinaman's arse? RICE, RICE, RICE!"

An LSU alumnus who was in school in the 60s related that cheer to me. We used to play Houston or Rice pretty much every year.

In 1958 Coach Dietzel had to deal with the NCAA's very limited substitution rules. The rule was that if a player was in the game at the start of a quarter, he could be replaced and then return ONLY ONCE in that period.

I don't think Gus would have liked 1958 very much.

If we had your D we would call it the Wrecking Crew. That named died because our defense has sucked for a decade.

I know. I was trying to be nice.

I saved my snark attack for the "rivalry" thread.

We'll have to come up with some un-PC Native American nickname for the Aggy D with Big Chief presiding.

Back in the day we really liked Dietzel and his brand of football. His white team, go team and Chinese bandits inspired us play ground kids. Tackle the man with the ball would probably not be allowed today but when someone made a tackle we would yell , "Chinese Bandit."
