Why don't programs do more to publicize the names of rogue boosters?

Honest question. Sometimes you'll hear a name -- I've heard ones associated with Bama and Auburn and OM and MSU and Miami, for instance, though I'll be damned if I can remember what they are -- but you'd think programs under scrutiny should be doing everything possible to make sure these are household names for everyone who follows the sport. Takes some pressure off you and is a good object lesson for other boosters -- get us in trouble and the entire fanbase will know who you are and hate your guts.

Indeed. But we're not talking about Fulmer, we're talking about people who got caught damaging the university and manage to remain relatively anonymous.

Those same names usually write really big checks to the athletic department every year. No AD is going to risk that relationship.

I was thinking that, but I was also thinking that these boosters could be costing more money than they're paying. If, for instance, a booster was involved with the current OM scandal, he just helped cost OM several million dollars. Bowl bans and sanctions hurt major universities to the tune of several million dollars as well. At some point, you cut the line decisively. Think the Miami booster (Shapiro?) is still welcome around those parts?

This. ADs can't foster public antagonism between the department and the boosters, no matter how "rogue" a booster goes. These problems are dealt with "internally." The big check writers want, more than anything, to feel like they're better than the average fan; that the level of access and trust between them and the program far exceeds anything we plebeians enjoy. With that comes an understanding that family matters will be handled within the family. Never underestimate a 1%er's ability to have his or her pride wounded. And since there's usually more ego and bluster there, the wound is more severe.
