While its definitely a huge thing at Bama, I've seen Houndstooth items being worn at A&M games, just not all over the place.
I tailgate with a guy who has a maroon blazer, a houndstooth blazer and a houndstooth hat. As you can imagine, those really only get worn during November in College Station or for the bowl game.

Has anyone thought that maybe the reason it has become a trend outside of alabama football related apparel is because alabama's success the last few years has brought it to the forefront and it has become popular as a result?

It was already becoming popular around the country again prior to Saban even coming to Alabama. It was 2006 when Alabama starting releasing those hats and had the houndstooth collar on the jerseys during the 2006 Ole Miss game.
