It would be embarrassing to lose every game and still be ranked below jr.

It's also pretty embarrassing to lose to an FCS school.

Wellllllllll, come to think of it ... there is that. I mean 1972-1992 we were Independent - BTW, how many conference titles did any of the other Independents have during their Independent years?

Not just those 20 years. Roughly half of our football history was as an independent so whatever.

When was Mizzou's lsat conference title in football though? Wasn't it the same year as ours?

I find the Mizzou loss more embarrassing TBH.

Football 1 conference title in program history. 1 division title in program history. Only 3 seasons with 11 wins in school history. They've never had a 12 win season in school history. Basketball no elite eights 8 total tourney appearances. South Carolina seems to have pretty good facilities and they're in a decent location for recruiting. They should be a lot better than that IMO. What gives? This post was edited on 5/2 at 11:35 pm

Such a harsh post coming from a mizzou fan.

I asked the question didn't I? Fill me in, buddy. You are the expert on Gamecock athletics

We had several things working against us for most of our history ... not the least of which was a very small (well under 3 million) population base until just recently - from which Georgia and FSU would raid us annually for our best players for obvious reasons. Auburn to too some degree.

Clemson cheated to get where they got - and they paid the price but it really didn't hurt them in the end. And by "cheated" I mean, worse than SMU. Death penalty worthy.

We have always had this aversion to cheating, to paying recruits. I honestly wish we would get with the program in that regard.

We suffered through some really bad leadership, at the top, Board of Trustees and Presidents ... especially during the Holderman years. Bad decision, bad hires, bad fires, robbing of the athletic budget, etc.

We suffered through the losses of two good coaches for bad reasons ... Jim Carlen was fired on moral grounds - total hypocrisy by Holderman. Coach Carlen was a great man. Joe Morrison died during the steroid scandal investigation, of a heart attack ... he was a helluva coach.

We were snakebit there for awhile.

We were dealt a harsh blow with the steroid scandal in the mid 80s ... everyone was doing it, we were the sacrificial lambs of the NCAA. It cost us for years afterwards, the subsequent rebuilding. At the same time our fandom never quit, we kept coming to the ballgames ... that eventually helped to get us into the SEC.

Things started turning for the better, for us, with the hiring of Mike McGee as our AD under John Palms who was then our President. They got us the funding, started keeping the money in the athletic department and doing what was necessary to become a major player one day ... also thanks to the SEC and people like Bill Arnsparger and Jeremy Foley (Foley walked us through it as an assistant AD at the time), Vince Dooley, Johnny Majors, et al, not the least of which was Roy Kramer.

Oh, and Paul Dietzel ... he loved us, worked tirelessly for us. Lobbied to help get us in with everyone he knew in the SEC ... he was a great man as well. He really loved our fans - said from the day he started working here that one day we would be members of the SEC. Was single-handedly responsible for pulling the strings that got our big stadium enlargement in the 70s ... and that ended up playing a huge part in the SEC's decision to extend an invite when all was said and done.

Despite all of the negatives we've endeavored to overcome, we've certainly "sucked" no worse than have some others in their history in the SEC, and those with pre-SEC history ... and we've contributed to the conference and will continue to do so. As our population base continues to grow, and our recruiting footprint continues to expand, our facilities are always improving and we continue to make strides .... our time will come. It's just a matter of time.

Does that satisfy your curiosity?

I imagine it was also pretty embarrassing to lose to a horrible Indiana team?

I can also imagine that if Mizzou played Southern Conference teams often enough, you'd have eventually lost to one as well. They have a history of sneaking up in trap games, especially when a program is in as much turmoil as was SCAR this past season ... and beating them.

But your thread was all about the troll ... I knew that it was, it's what your life revolves around.

Pretty sure Leicester City had better odds to win a title than South Carolina does to win the east.

What you evidently fail to realize, or perhaps your obsession with SCAR has made you blind .... is the fact that our "suffered through" days are pretty much behind us. Past tense. Our karma is fairly clean.

We're members of the $100 million club with $70 million stashed away in an emergency athletic fund and all of our improvements are paid for as we go. We're debt free. Our enrollment is at an all time high ... we're building new housing and dorms all over the city just to meet demand of new students wanting to enroll. Our campus is expanding in leaps and bounds. We're one smidgen away from being AAU accredited as a research institution and with the Innovista District now fully under construction and big money corporations flocking in we're that much closer.

Honestly, for the most part, as a university, we've got nothing but good things ahead of us.

I'd hate to be in Mizzou's shoes right now.

Yet I doubt any Gamecock fans are gonna beat that dead horse again anytime soon ... because we really could care less about what Mizzou does next to shoot themselves in the foot.

Mizzou has absolutely nothing in common with The University of South Carolina or our fans.

This City of Columbia is a cesspool...It really is. This University and stadium is in Downtown Columbia and the place has no "college town" feel. It is not the type of school where a recruit can be impressed with the facilities and location...Sure, the SEC money is allowing them to put lipstick on a pig with nicer facilities, but a lot of quality schools in the South have pumped in ton of cash on facilities and USC has no advantage..

Most South Carolina fans think they only started playing football about 5-6 years ago. They did not go their first bowl until 1995....

Their Baseball trophy case is more impressive than anything they have

What CU Tigers means by cesspool is that Columbia has a large population of African Americans. In Clemson, they do not tolerate black people who are not playing a varsity sport.

Nevermind that Columbia boasts the only National Park in the State and is surrounded by thousands of times the acreage of rivers, lakes, farmland, and public outdoor space than Meth Valley ever dreamed of.

To the OP- the reason is quite simple. Our Board of Trustees is and always has been much more concerned with taking care of friends and family than they are about winning. Until that changes, not much else will.

10/10 would keep our less-than-stellar athletic history, booming financial status, and ever-increasing enrollment over Mizzou's floundering budget, embarrassingly low student application status, and downright humiliating situation currently plaguing your student body and academia.

What was that sound? Did Mizzou just close another dorm?

Nice use of the race card. It seems you have a bigger problem with race than I do. That was the furthest thing from my mind when I made my post...When I think of the public urinal called Five Points is a place which most white college students choose to relieve themselves is just one of the endearing part of Columbia.

I'm actually stopping in Columbia, MO on a road trip later this year. I'm wondering how many times I'm going to have to check my privilege while I'm there.
