Nice observation Peter, it's kind of like all the UG tags and stickers that I see now in Jacksonville that were nonexistent until about 3 years ago.

My god Florida used to pecker whip people in the 90s and made you like it. And I'll die on this hill. The two people that threw the prettiest spiral on a football came from Florida. Danny wuerful and Chris leak. Man they used to throw some beautiful balls.

It’s simple demographics. Until about 1970 air conditioning wasn’t a thing and Florida had a low population. Then as air conditioning became normal, more people were able to move there to the point that it’s the 3rd most populated state in the country now.

Air conditioning was the missing piece of the puzzle that kept Florida from doing what Georgia Tech and Tulane had done? I

The population in Georgia in 1970 was 4.8 Million and 3.2 million in Louisiana and 6.8 million in Florida. They didn't have AC in Georgia or Louisiana yet but GT had won 5 and Tulane had won 3 SEC titles before 1970. Not to mention what UGA and LSU had done....with smaller populations and no AC.....

I always thought Shane Matthews threw one of the nicest, tightest spirals I’ve seen. Even as a 3 time all SEC QB and POY twice, he still seems underrated. Terrific QB.

If Spurrier had stayed at UF and not changed jobs he would have been right behind Saban as one of the GOATS. Really good coach who even turned SC into a contender.

He would have won a few more titles had he stayed at Florida.

Florida was always solid in the 80's and a very tough matchup for LSU. Spurrier came in a took it to another level and dominated us and everyone else.

Not many folks are alive today that remember Tennessee being pretty good at football, but I remember.

The UAA conspired with the HVAC manufacturers to keep Floridians down, clearly.

I think it was both a personal grudge and also that Spurrier didn't like the cheating that went on.

It's rather ironic that Spurrier didn't like the cheating going on at UF; I'm sure he didn't.

However, among the reasons Spurrier left Florida was because of his dispute with the UF admin........he was upset that UF would not permit him to cut some corners in recruiting that he felt some other programs were getting away with (hooray for the UF admin). I know this is true from several sources within the UF department at the time. In fact, one of your most "favorite" writers (I use that word in a sarcastic way) at an Orlando paper who 's a UF alumnus relayed this info to certain other members of the media (moi).

It was also known that Spurrier left Florida owing a certain other big-time donor to the Gator program money from a golfing bet that he lost.

Spurrier could be quite "spurrilous" in his ways.

It needs to be noted that as far as football is concerned... Florida was the first state to have organized "year round" football programs at the high school level. It took about a decade before all the other states allowed that. For a period of time Florida was far and away the best HS football state.

I don't believe a word of this. I'm old enough to remember when and why he left. He was sick of the bull gators but to think they wouldn't let him cheat but a couple years later they hired Meyer. So they cheated through the 80s, wouldn't cheat with Spurrier but let Meyer bring in the worst people on one team we've ever seen.

Spurrier single-handedly turned the Georgia-Florida rivalry around. Brutally, thoroughly, and with great joy.

Here’s a timely radio clip of Bob talking about Spurrier:
