Because they are fricking retards.
When going through pre-game warmups and shite, sometimes a QB will go through the motions in an exaggerated way to show the coach that he knows he's supposed to be serious about the fake, even though the team's only going through the plays at half-speed.
When QBs actually do this in games, they are morons, and yes, it is becoming rampant.
I would imagine you're right. Like school kids that get scolded for doing something the wrong way and and then over exaggerate the opposite.

ahh yes the todd! even the blind squirrel finds the nut. brandon cox wasn't and awful play action passer
and hey greene went 2-2 vs auburn so that should help. plus his games against tech were usually filthy. even in 2004 when he came in with a broken thumb to seal the W. but despite the fact he was incredibly slow and had a weak arm he just was really good at the little things like play action

Watch BG sell the spin move at the LOS and the safety jump all over it. That turned the play from a 25-30 yard gain into a TD.

Parksas, I have to agree about Todd. He may have wore concrete slippers but he threw a great fake.

When running a play-action fake, why do a lot of QB's these days bend down toward the backfield with more emphasis than they usually would if they were actually handing it off? Shouldn't the objective be to run the fake hand-off just like a real hand-off (except the actual hand-off part)? QB's don't typically do such a hard and fast bend on running plays.
It is kinda the same thing as stage actor versus screen actor. The stage actor has to have bigger movements to make sure people see it.
A QB wants people to key in on the fake and he'd prefer people don't see the real handoff. If you're trying to hide the fake, then why bother faking? A pump fake is similar. A pump fake is usually a quicker motion than a real throw, however the motion makes people react.
