Why didn't Spurrier go to UT? Totally unrelated, but is anyone else as nerdy as me and get annoyed at this line from "Wagon Wheel": "headed west from the Cumberland Gap to Johnson City, Tennessee" Johnson City is east of the Cumberland Gap damn it!
I get annoyed by that song period. As if it hadn't already been played to death, Darious fricker comes along and makes it worse

I was born in Johnson City, but I haven't been back since. I want to got here in the fall when the leaves change or in the spring and do some trout fishing. I hear it's a beautiful area.

Johnson City has a great music scene. East Tennessee State has churned out a number of top bluegrass musicians and Kenny Chesney out of its Bluegrass, Old Time and Country Music program Check out rising alt country group The Twang Bangers' on iTunes and Spotify (Midnight Train, Back Home (Tennessee), 12 Steps, Cowboy Angel) -- They played Tuscaloosa a few weeks back. Looks like Stone Brewery may be arriving soon.
Of course, I am biased, went to State. Nearby Watauga Lake and Roan Mountain in Carter County for my money are two of prettiest places I've seen in Southeast

Ive been wondering this for years. It kills me. Maps people. Look at a map for one second and your song would be geographically correct.

Spurrier was born in Miami Beach....just so you folks know the facts.
UT was horrible back then and did run a 1950s offense...UF had hired Pepper Rodgers as OC which can be compared to having Malzahn as OC in early to mid 1960s....and Spurrier loved Blue and Orange, so theres that.

I always heard people from Tri-Cities say Johnson City is an amazing place.
Yes it is, Jonesborough, Bristol, Johnson City is a nice area and a living shrine to Spurrier if you ever spend any time up there his image is everywhere.

That's pretty much what I've heard him say ... except the last part about the colors.
He's still very close to Pepper Rodgers, who also gave him his first coaching job at Ga Tech if I am not mistaken?
Rodgers comes to at least one Carolina game a year and usually sits in Spurrier's private box.

This event right here shaped the SEC forever. Had he played at UT, does he stay at Duke until Majors was done or end up elsewhere in the conference? Would Florida still be a sleeping giant as opposed to the program they are now?

Ray Mears also recruited him to play basketball at UT,too. He did not want to play in Bowden Wyatt's Wing-T.If you'll note after Wyatt was fired and Jim MacDonald's interim period was up, Tennessee hired Doug Dickey who scrapped the Wing-T.

He's from Johnson City, right? How did he end up at UF?
Back the did Florida have a lower drinking age? Also, seems like the OBC prefers beer so Tennessee sippin whiskey was probably not a selling point.

Kenny Chesney is from the same place that produced Roy Acuff, Chet Atkins, and Carl Smith (to name only a few) despite being incredibly small in population. I know you're proud of ETSU but it didn't have much to do with producing Kenny.
That said, Johnson City does indeed have a great music scene that goes pretty far back.

I remember when Kenny would sit around and play at the Lambda Chi house. He is from Knoxville, but as I recall, he didn't really start taking music seriously until he got to ETSU.

Mallon Faircloth - good player but not Steve Spurrier
