1 - Fulmer Award (it tainted him)

2 - Failed to negotiate another slush fund for recruiting like he had at UT.

3 - Clogged arteries, high blood pressure.

4 - Men's Big and Tall stores quit carrying his size coaching britches.

5 - Secret "must show just cause" deal struck with NCAA after NCAA academic investigation findings during his tenure. LINK

6 - Feelings were hurt by everyone calling him "Phat Phil" ... "everyone" being the interviewers at the jobs he lobbied for.

7 - There are rumors that he killed five hookers in Knoxville.

8 - He was demanding a "chow budget" be included in his compensation package, and that was a deal breaker for all ADs.

9 - Peyton begged him not to go anywhere else until he (Peyton) returned to Kneeville and could appoint/anoint him to a special position at UT.

10 - All the potential bag men that he wanted for his next staff have already been taken.

Why would he? He had enough money, he had accomplished everything anyone could in college football coaching (stellar record, SEC titles, national title), and coaching is a hell of a hard job to do. The hours are ridiculous. If you had a 100-hour-a-week-job and were in your late 50s and had earned enough to retire comfortably, why on earth wouldn't you?

He really didn't want another job, besides, he was paid a shitload of buyout money, if he had gotten another head coaching job, he would have had to give it up.

After Steve Kragthorpe was fired in 2009, Fulmer met with UofL AD Tom Jurich about the job.

He like Spurrier had already found a life outside football and 1/2 assed it the last few years and it showed in the results... Saban is not there yet...but he has gradkids now and it will happen if he stays long enough! Just human nature when you reach them years...

Yep. One can assume he was smart with his money. I'd retire early too if that were the case.

Not recently but he publicly said more than once he wanted to coach again. What options if any he had? I have no idea.... But seems to me he hardly was turning them down left and right because he wanted to hunt and enjoy life like some are implying. His image (coaching wise) did took a hit late in his career. Tennessee played some bad football in his last years.

Phil Fulmer is known as a very good man.

We're sorry your filthy, scumbag program got turned in by Steve Spurrier and and testified against by Phil Fulmer.

Perhaps if you weren't the filthiest program in the NCAA, things like that wouldn't happen.

Only program in history so filthy, that boosters went to Federal prison.

Bama has NEVER won consistently unless they were cheating. Including now.

Free car keys and custom wheels with every LOI.

Filthy pieces of shite.

Same reason why Tom Osborne retired early.....lived their dream and sit out to relax the rest of their lives.

He retired relatively young, but I will say that it seems like that 05-08 run really aged him a lot.

Look at him in 2004 then again in 2008. He looked unhealthy and like it took a lot out of him knowing everything he built crumbled out around him.

I think it effected him a lot emotionally and while he entertained coaching again, the only opportunities he could have earned I think he felt were "below" him and not worth it.

I think he made the right call. I would be shocked if he isn't our next AD in a few years.

Rumor was his Krispy Kreme clause was so large Bert and Mark could have survived on just the excess. That many doughnuts would have bankrupted most Division I programs. Only possible solution was a D I school with Krispy Kreme as their corporate Sugar Daddy and those may not exist. Knight/Nike is to Oregon as Krispy Kreme is to X, solve for answer.

A bit off topic, but when Fulmer was hired, what part, if any, did he have in Johnny Majors being forced out? My brother was a big UT fan, but he didn't personally care so much for Fulmer because of what he perceived/"heard" of his alleged lobbying for the job behind Majors back...any UT fans know if any of that is accurate or is it just urban legend?

Associated Press

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer grew up in the small town of Winchester, a short drive from the Alabama border, and seriously considered playing for Crimson Tide coach Bear Bryant before choosing the rival Volunteers.

quote:

He was a Tennesseean born and raised. Played and coached at Tennessee for 35 years. Tennessee was always his final job. He was fired at age 58 and moved on with his life to be with his grand kids and the millions of dollars in his bank account. Can't blame him.
