He was never asked to submit his resume. Do coaches even submit resumes anywhere? That's not really how it works at this level.

At most he was asked to explain why this time would be different, seeing as how he'd just left UF a few years previously, and what his plan was. He probably didn't like that. I love SOS as much as anyone, but he has a gigantic ego. He never said to go look in the trophy case. A journalist wrote that as a joke and people have taken it as gospel. It's not the truth.

I do agree that he ultimately preferred to go to SC. He likes building programs and got tired of the expectations at UF. Here is the reason he probably enjoys SC more:

SC 2012 Record: 11-2. Fans adore him, rings are made for players. Everyone feels great.

UF 2012 Record: 11-2. Many fans still skeptical. Many fans bitching, etc.

Was told he would go through interview process like other candidates.

Oh, you nailed it at the end there.

Expectations my man, they are good thing - most of the time. With UF right now I think it is lack of patience for some. Our fans have .00265 level of patience, and that's being kind.

Better question is how different would things be if Bertman had given Saban his old job back like he asked before he went to Bama.

We should be skeptical. This will be Boom's third year, so there's no excuse for the offense to keep being as awful as it's been.

you gotta be kidding me. LSU had a coach. so they were supposed to just fire him and rehire saban? then the new coach continued to compile the best record LSU has had over his time frame; better than saban too.

Oh...as for him being a Gamecock...he is now but if you cut his wrist you will find orange and blue blood pouring out.

he played at florida and was the qb on the first good teams y'all ever had. BUT, spurrier doesn't bleed ornge and blue anymore than he bleeds UT colors. he always was independent as hell and will always be both a gator AND a gamecock.

Not really. In fact, he has been quite honest about it. When asked, he typically says I am a Gamecock now but a Gator for life. That is the way it should be and that is the way it is.

At the end of the day this has worked out better for all parties. It is unlikely Spurrier would have matched the 2 titles. Meyer brought a new intensity to Florida football.

Probably answered already but it's because Florida didn't want him. Machen (UF Pres) had his guy and his guy was Urban Cryer, the ultimate douche bag.

I agree with your last three entries ... you're first two, notsomuch.

When Spurrier accepted the job at SC, we were in The Zone. I had been invited up there - well - because I'm special. (Not really but it's a long story.) So I'm sitting there among the VIPs and Press and when he finally gets done with his talk about "why not us" there was a folding table that had been set-up over against the West Wall of The Zone. So I got up to get away from the craziness and, quite honestly I wanted to reflect on my buddy Lou Holtz. I had also been down stairs in the Lettermens' lounge when he had done his exit press conference, standing right beside him, and it was sad in a lot of ways.

But at any rate, I'm sitting there at this folding table and I see this crowd migrating towards where I am sitting ... then Spurrier is pulled out of the crowd by Kerry Tharpe, our SID at the time. He brings Spurrier over to sit down at the table and I go to get-up and Spurrier says, "sit right there, don't move, you can block some of them for me."

So I sort of poke my chest out and look around and say okay.

Reporters from everywhere are swarming us. Place was packed with news crews from the NY Times, Charlotte, Atlanta, local people out the arse ... and one of the Charleston reporters asked him in the midst of all the rumble of 1000 people talking, "Steve, why here and why not back at Florida?" And Spurrier, sort of looked down at the table and straightened up a little and said, "Awww, I dunno, you can't go home. You ever hear that before?" And he laughed. Then the reporter said, "I heard they asked you to give them a resume," and Spurrier cut him off and said, "Did ya? Where did you hear that from? Who told you that exactly?" And you could tell Spurrier was a little pissed because someone down at Florida was already talking. I mean you could visibly see it on Spurrier's face that he did not appreciate that the gossip was already starting. So he thinks for a minute and he says, "Awwww, yeah I guess Foley was told to tell me they needed my resume because of that thing that went on with O'Leary and all ... you know, George had that problem with his resume a few years ago ... but nahhh, I told them I didn't have one. I told them to go look in their trophy case, that's where I keep my resume."

And everyone busted-out laughing.

I sat right there to his left, at the end of the table, during the whole interview session that lasted for over an hour. Matter of fact, one time he leaned over to me and asked me if I smoked. I said "no." He said, "do you smell it?" I told him yes I did and I pointed out who it was, a reporter just in front of me and to my left. He said to the guy, "you smoke?" Guy says, "yes I do, do you want one?" Spurrier says, "I need you to back away just a little bit if you don't mind. I don't hang around smokers - you know, that second-hand smoke stuff and all."

Reporters learned from that moment forward they had better not come around Spurrier smelling like cigarette smoke.

Spurrier is one of a kind and will miss him when he isnt coaching anymore. He doesnt kiss the media's azz and he tries to tell it straight..as much as decorum will allow.

He isnt ego driven as some think and he makes fun of himself quite often and will blame losses on his poor coaching when it needs to be said. SOS has been around long enough that he knows some games are just meant to be lost...no matter what or won no matter what. He does want to win and is not afraid to take chances...he will roll the dice at times...and more times than not he wins.

The thing that drove him crazy was newbie Gator fans that didnt have memories of the all the futile years the school suffered in the SEC...and didnt appreciate 2 loss seasons like they should have..compared to many years of being thrilled to just go to a bowl game. His success spoiled many. Fans were not going to criticize Spurrier after a loss...as he was untouchable...but the poor DC or asst coach would catch hell every time.

I'm not going to say that you are lying. I'm only going to tell you that Foley never asked SOS to submit his resume.

The problem for me in believing it is that I haven't seen and cannot find one reporter who reported Spurrier saying that. It is always couched as SOS "supposedly" saying it. I've never seen one article (and I've looked) where a journalist has written that he/she heard SOS say it. If you can find one who was there and who reported it, I'll buy it.

The question should be where would LSU be today if OBC had waited for that job instead of jumping on the USCe job?
