What was the reasoning for each school's departure?

They couldn't stand the lack of ethics at the administrative and institutional levels, that permeated the league at that time and to this day

G tech left due to Alabama oversigning and cutting players like Saban is doing now.

Bobby Dodd said it was wrong and he refused to do it and believed it created an uneven playing field for the Bear and Bama. He was right.

Sewanee left because it de-emphasized/dropped sports ...Tulane left because it WAS going to demphasize sports and become a 1-AA school; be like the "Harvard" of the south...my understanding...

I don't remember what it was, but someone needs to find that run Sewanee went on once. It's considered the best run in football history. They played something like 5 games in 8 days or something equally as outrageous, all major SEC teams (I THINK) and dominated all of them.

If they left, they quit. Why cut players back then? You could have all you want, remember?

If he was mad he couldn't recruit against Bear, would leaving the conference somehow make him ABLE to recruit against him? Bryant was still going to get the majority of players he wanted.

Damn, the only team that scored on them was Auburn, led by Coach John Heisman lol. 8 games played in Nov, at one point 5 games over 6 days.

The 1899 Iron Men team's most notable accomplishment was a six-day period from November 9 to 14 which is arguably the greatest road trip in college football history. Manager Luke Lea put together an improbable schedule of playing five big name opponents in six days, all on the road. Sewanee played and shut out them all while travelling by train for 2500 miles

Sewanee became our main rival after Auburn quit on us in 1906-07.

Tulane could not win many football games.

G Tech was not up to it either.

Sewanee never won a conference football game in its 8 years in the SEC.

Sewanee probably never should have been in the SEC to start with. Even though they had been a power in the late 1890's to 1910's, they had already started slipping and caring less about big time sports. They never did win an SEC football game.Their last wins over what became SEC teams were over LSU and Ole Miss in 1931. After WWII they began playing what we think of now as Division III teams.

Georgia Tech and mainly HC and AD Bobby Dodd left over the "140 Rule" where schools could have 140 football players AND basketball players on scholarship, but with schools being able to sign 45 players, some were "cut" which Dodd disapproved of and felt was wrong. He felt Tech was at a disadvantage where their requirements made it more difficult to just offer anyone a scholarship while most state universities could offer them to anyone for what he felt were 'tryouts'.

He had no problem with giving a number of scholarships as long as there was no composite requiring schools to 'cut players'. SEC presidents split on his proposal and Tech left.

Georgia Tech did re-apply for admission in 1973.

Tulane's departure had been in the works behind the scenes since the early 1950's

Tulane got caught up in the "Southern Ivy League" thing initially proposed by Vandy. There were meetings and teams lined up, but a lot of the schools backed out due to losing big money conference ties. I don't think this is exactly why we left the SEC as this was a few years prior, but I think it started the movement to de-emphazie athletics.

If that had any shred of truth to it, GT wouldn't have continued to play us after they left the league. GT was attached to Alabama back then, hell, they are mentioned in our fight song and Auburn is not.
