Why did Emory Bellard leave Texas A&M during the 1978 season?

had had good teams in mid 70's ,especially the 1975 team, and was ranked #6 at one point in '78.

Always seemed strange.

I was 2 years old so I am certainly no witness and have no memory, but the story I always heard was that after a couple losses that season some donors started grumbling. Bellard went to the A&M President wanting confirmation that he would be around the next season. He didn't get it and promptly resigned.

That's my understanding anyway. Some older Ags might have a better idea.

They never could handle that he helped invent the Wishbone at Texas as an assistant coach and that he played football for D.X. Bible at Texas for one year.

Nice response. No refutation, just insults.

Went 40-13 in last 4 1/2 seasons with 2 ten win seasons...

4-2 when he left program in '78... Odd...

No substance, not value-added, just shitposting alter.

As a dog returns to its vomit, so do shitposting t-sip alters return to shitposting in topics not about them.

Our decision-makers have a history of making boneheaded calls.

Was last 3 years of Royal, start of Akers. Looked like you were holding your own. Royal even had a 5-5-1 season in there. Emory's worst in that 5 year run was 8-4... Bad Admin. decision?

Ballard, if you read the article reporting it, was sick of the grumbling from the big donors because his teams failed to make the Cotton Bowl. In the two games prior to his resignation, they failed to score a TD, losing 33-0 to Cougar High and 24-6 to Rapelor.

Back then, the Cotton Bowl was the measure of success.

he went 8-4 and ended up 5th in the SWC the season before he resigned. Got blown out by USC in the Bluebonnet Bowl.

Started out his final season like gangbusters then got blown out by UH (his team got blown out in big games), and then lost to a crappy Baylor team at home, to start conference play 1-2. He wanted the President to back him up and didn't get the response he wanted. He had a tough time handling the pressure. Was it a mistake to not back him - maybe. He turned A&M around for sure. But he lost every big game while he was there.

Badly, too. Now before I go any further I know full well that A&M defeated LSU in '74 and '75.

But I remember at the end of both seasons ABC showing their season ending games on TV with the Cotton Bowl on the line and Texas winning,32-3 in '74 and Arkansas 31-6 in '75. Arkie came wound up costing them a NC.

Still.........he had some fine squads.

You just described why he left.

texashorn doesn't know shite. No one cared that he coached under Royal. In fact, Royal was the "gold standard" in the SWC at that time. And the total opposite was true. He was hired because he was a Royal disciple.

Randy, texashorn, Charles Satrerfield III, go stick one of your orange didldos up your arse. We are all tired of your shite. Get you OCD diagnosed and treated before you hurt yourself.

I will always have a warm spot in my heart for Emory. He defenses were pretty salty as well. He also got blown out in a big match-up against Michigan on national tv.

His leash was short because he was a "sip." Aggy denial is hilarious.
