Did they care about the program when it sucked?

Pretty easy.

I mean with people you don't know. I don't know anyone who has changed what school they are a fan of

Ask them detailed questions about the bad years that only someone who was tuned into the program back then would know.

LSU alum, and I grew up in Baton Rouge.

Growing up in Baton Rouge, LSU tended to be very likable at the time (70's through 90's). If you apply a non-sports analogy, the SEC was ruled by tyrants (Alabama football, Kentucky basketball), and LSU was the courageous underdog who rose up and challenged those tyrants, and held their own.

Mom is from SC and went to undergrad at Clemson. Dad is from San Diego and went to UCLA. He joined the navy after college as a nuclear engineer and was stationed in Charleston, where he met my mom who was spending her post grad years partying it up in Charleston..

Growing up I was a big UCLA fan.. I would go to Cali with my dad several times a year. Mom tried to make me a Clemson fan by introducing me to baseball as a child (Clemson was pretty good in baseball at the time)... Ironically, baseball made me into a SC fan.. watched SC make it to the championship game of the 2002 CWS. Eventually did my undergrad at SC and my mom despises me for it to this day haha..

Really? You'd better go back and check your "history". Alabama didn't lose in Baton Rouge to LSU from 1969 until 2000..thirty-one years!..a frigging entire generation!

Yeah. I don't see the problem with sidewalkers for that very reason. If you were raised in a place where a given university's influence is stronger than your average bear, it's natural to cheer for that university even if you never, or haven't yet, attended the university. Obviously it hurts your standing if you're also a bandwagoner, but I have little respect for alumni who bandwagon, so it's not an issue exclusive to sidewalk fans.

Actually grew up an Ole Miss fan going to games in the 80's. Went to State because my brother was there and did a complete turn from red and blue to maroon and white.I am a graduate, as well as my wife and brother. My son will also be attending MSU in a few years.

Born a Gamecock, raised a Gamecock, I'm a student at South Carolina, then I'll probably die before 40 because I'm a damn Gamecock for life and this team has probably taken away at least a few decades

Quit being a troll. Or maybe go look at your own "history".

LSU owned Alabama in the state of Alabama in the 80's (won in 82, 84, 86, 88), and tied in BR in 85. LSU won the SEC and/or went to major bowls (Sugar, Orange) 3 times in that decade, and had a 10 win season in 88.

As Alabama was the established elite team and LSU was the underdog, I'd say that was quite a respectable challenge.

Uh, I'm mainly a fan of Wichita State but since we don't have a football team I'll say the teams that I "cheer for" in football

TCU - Grew up in Fort Worth

Clemson - My friend got me to watch one of their games and their offense is just so fun to watch...

Wisconsin - Won't lie, its because they're the badgers and I love that.

Indiana - bc they suck and its funny when they win

Ball State - See Indiana, but in the MAC.

Miss St. - I dunno, I just kinda subconsciously want these guys to win usually.

For 31 years LSU couldn't beat Alabama at their OWN house! You speak of the 80s? Wasn't Alabama 5-4-1 even during LSU's "golden decade"? The all-time record will be 50-25-1 Alabama, after this year's annual arse whipping, so go talk that coonass shite to the other schools in the conference....but don't bring that crap around Alabama folks.

Fine. The OP asked why we are fans of our particular teams. I've stated my reasoning, you can go blow yourself.
If there is a thread why we DISlike particular teams, people like you are the main reason I hate Alabama.

Attended both the University of Arkansas and Iowa about 50 years ago. I grew up in Iowa about 25 miles from Iowa City, but am definitely a bigger Arkansas fan than Hawkeyes.
