I guarantee you anyone who is a fan of one school in football and another in basketball doesn't have a degree from either.

ETA: or a degree from both, which is perfectly acceptable, IMO.

So it was "some" who supposedly were LSU football and Kentucky basketball fans but now it's one that you can't remember?

It's very simple. There are emotional connections, centimental values attached in most cases. I'm a gamecock through and through. Went to school at carolina. Even sat through that whole massacare against Pickens college of the toothless.

However, I was born in Greensboro NC, lived close to chapel hill growing up, and my first sporting event was in 2001, a North Carolina basketball game, and at 6 years old, the players took pictures with me and let me come onto the court after the game and shoot the basketball. I loved that. I always pull for SC over everyone, but if SC has nothing to do with it, North Carolina is my second choice.

I have the same sort of connection. I grew up in a "football family" but excelled at basketball. A group of my AAU team, including myself, would go to Duke every summer and participate in their team camps. I got to play against/with a bunch of Duke/NBA players from Duke and got coaching from their entire staff (Coach K would hold an hour to two hour long lecture with the entire camp every night where he focused on something else for a 5 day period, assistant coaches, one of which is now a head coach at a pretty big school, did hands on with us in groups of 5-7) it was a cool experience and I went for three years in a row.
While Im attending school somewhere that isn't auburn, a school not big on sports, my family all went there and multiple people in my family were professors and faculty members at auburn for a majority of their professional careers. I've been going to auburn games for as long as I can remember and following the teams on forums and what not since I was a kid.
So while I don't have a degree from either of the schools I'll root for, I'll root for auburn over anyone and I like to see Duke do well in basketball just from a nostalgic standpoint. In a tournament standpoint it would still be a little hard for me to root for Duke over any SEC team and vise versa.

I have a degree from northwestern state, LSU, and Louisville. I'm a fan of all three.

I've met more than a few Clemson football fans who are North Carolina basketball fans.
