Why are SEC fans always the first to say the league is down this year?

The SEC is a tough conference to navigate. The facilities, recruiting, coaching are far superior to any other conference. It is only natural that we beat up on one another. The out-of-league games are a good indicator of how the league stacks up against the nation.
Just because some teams collapse after losing to Bama is no reason to think they are bad teams. The talent is still there.

Because we're most likely to watch all of the SEC games?

Because we expect excellence, top-to-bottom. The East has been shite for a while now.
Still, a down year in the SEC is like an all-time great B1G or ACC year.

What do you mean the first? It's been said every year from the outside

When Bama and Florida dominate the league is down. When someone else wins it's a surprise and the league is up.

Does it make some fans feel better about their own team? (misery loves company)
I've noticed that every year about this point in the season this kind of talk starts. At the beginning of the season all are world beaters.

the 10-12 teams in the league who don't win their division always claim the league is down, it's a defense mechanism.

Most everyone will go to a bowl game.

Statistically, this is a down year. The East is a mess, Florida has won some close games, but that is about it. Every other team has struggled. Arkansas lost 2 non-con games. Ole Miss to Memphis. Tennessee to Oklahoma.
This is just statistically and realistically, a down year.

Because Bama got their asses handed to them last year in the playoffs, and it looks like they are the best the SEC can muster this year.

Most of the stats are compiled against other SEC schools. Some good out of league wins that you can't ignore.

Revisionist history. (must be a democrat) Bama led most of the game and ended up losing by a touchdown.

Agree. This has become a thing for 2 reasons:
1. Haven't won the NC the last 2 seasons.
2. When you're at the top, there's no place to go but down.

We collapsed long before we play Bama and we are a bad team!

It's the best but not as dominant as fans think. The talent gap isn't as immense as recruiting rankings would have you believe. In 2006, we started to develop a narrative that no one could touch our athleticism, and it's just not true. For instance, virtually no one on this board would acknowledge that Michigan State is a very good team, but they play great football, have several NFL Draft picks this year, and would be favored on a neutral site against everyone in our conference except Bama (and the spread for that would be like 10).

the league is way up, We have great teams like UK, LSU, and A&M. Vandy is good and bama is on the upswing.
Then we have teams like state that lose to swac teams.

The SEC is going to wreck some teams in the bowl games. I would not want to be the Big10 no. 6 team playing UT in Birmingham.

Because it's the dominant narrative in all of college football and they want to act like they are above the fray.
SEC dominance is about allocation of resources. This basically dumbs down to money and recruiting. The SEC has this in spades, and that hasn't changed and it isn't changing for a while. 4 and 5 star recruits. Great coaches. Great facilities. Other schools have this too. It usually works out like this. The SEC has 8 or 9 teams finish with a top 25 recruiting class and they have 8 or 9 teams finish in the top 25. Florida State, Ohio State, tu, USC, Miami, Nebraska and Oklahoma. These schools also have top 25 recruiting classes, and guess what? These are the only non-SEC schools to win a National Championship in the last 20 years. These schools have the same resources as SEC schools. But thats only 2 schools at most from a conference. The SEC has 5 that have won in the past 20 years. It's a whole different game.
If your narrative about SEC dominance changes from one week of college football, your narrative was broken to begin with.
