Bama has 5 wins and 2 games left: State and Auburn
Auburn - definitely eliminated, can't get to 5 wins
A&M - mathematically possible if:
- Bama loses to State & Auburn
- A&M beats Vandy & LSU
- LSU beats Arkansas but loses to A&M and Ole Miss
- Ole Miss beats LSU but loses to State
- Arkansas beats Mizzou and State but loses to LSU
- State beats Bama and Ole Miss but loses to Arkansas
All of that would result in the following:
- Bama would be 5-3
- LSU would be 5-3
- Arkansas would be 5-3
- A&M would be 5-3
- State would be 5-3
Ah, screw it. In that case, Bama would still win the West.
So A&M is basically eliminated. Too many teams hold a head to head tiebreaker on them and they'll never win a tiebreaker based on BCS standing.
Also, the chances that the West champ will have 3 losses is next to impossible.
Alabama is in command. Everybody else is just playing for a better bowl game.
And it's highly likely the entire West will be going bowling. Again.

I think so, but Arkansas' hopes are on life support.

If state wins out, Bama beats Auburn, and LSU drops only one game, State goes to ATL.

Wat?
You're assuming State would win a three way tie between LSU, Bama and State if all three are tied at 6-2?
State, Bama and LSU would all have losses to each other. They would all have the same record against divisional opponents. It would fall down to the new rule of combined SEC record of each team's cross divisional opponents. State's cross division opponents this year were Mizzou and Kentucky. LSU's were Florida and Carolina. Bama's were Tennessee and Georgia. Bama would win that tiebreaker as Georgia and Tennessee have 7 combined wins whereas Mizzou and Kentucky have 3 combined wins. Florida and Carolina have 7 combined wins. That would leave LSU and Bama tied which of course LSU would lose on the head to head tiebreaker.
So State needs LSU to lose twice.

All we have to do is win out and Bama lose 2

Yes. Tie goes to record against the number 4 team, then 5th if necessary, which in this scenario will be Ole Miss and Arkansas depending on which beats LSU. State would have beaten both of them.
So let's say LSU loses to Ole Miss. 3 way tie between state, Bama, and LSU... Tie breaker would go to record against 4th place, who is Ole Miss, who both LSU and Bama would have a loss to.
A 3 way tie between state, Bama, and LSU goes to state. The trick is getting to that point.

I was pretty sure that the tie goes to the highest ranked team

Oh is that it? Seems pretty easy.

It doesn't.

This isn't how it works.

Alabama is the only team in charge of their own fate.
LSU and Ole Miss can both still win by simply winning their remaining games and having Alabama lose once.
MSU, Arkansas are still alive but need a lot of help.
A&M needs many miracles.
