The 1977 Alabama team (Jan 2, 1978) or the 1983 Auburn team (Jan 2, 1984)?

Alabama finished 2nd behind Notre Dame. Auburn finished 3rd behind Miami and Nebraska.

Bama.

Auburn wasn't winning a NC after getting whooped at home by Texas in what was, at that time at least, the biggest home game in their history.

86' Tennessee

Miami got that arse beat so bad that they wouldn't even mention it in their 30 for 30

Alabama beat the shite out of Ohio State that year, 35-6. Ohio State had 2 previous losses already, but they were to #3 Oklahoma (28-29) and #5 Michigan (6-14). Alabama lost to Nebraska (finished 9-3) in Memorial Stadium, while Notre Dame lost to a 5-6 Ole Miss team.

On the flip side though, ND won out and beat #1 Texas 38-10. Also beat #5 USC (49-19), #15 Clemson (21-17), and #7 Pitt (19-9).

Alabama also played USC in LA and won.

Can't imagine if programs scheduled games today like they did back then.

83 Auburn. Man was I pulling hard for Miami in that game but now looking back I'm sad for that Husker team and Osborne. He showed historic sack that day. I think SI voted Auburn their champs no?

94 Penn State deserves a share of the title like none other.

The 30 for 30 didn't mention the 93 Sugar Bowl either.

The reason I pull for conference teams in ooc play is because I have witnessed SEC teams get screwed because of misperception as a weak conference. Those days are long gone and no undefeated SEC champion will get left out. But I can see a day a one loss champion gets the number 5 spot, because the media is back to hyping the Big 10 and Pac12. Just like they were doing back then.
