For quite some time Southern Miss actually had more students then the other two.

That has changed quite a bit and now the two SEC schools are comfortably ahead.

I would have given the edge to Ole Miss because they do have a good medical school, but if you look up their wikipedia entry someone made sure to say they were the flagship university of their state.

If you have to say it then it probably isn't true. I call it a draw. Long term Ole Miss might have the edge because they are pouring money into expanding their footprint in Northern Mississippi which should continue to grow as more people move from Memphis to the area.

Our academics are more impressive and our sports programs, men and women's, have been more consistent and to championships OM hasn't sniffed in the last quarter century. It's kinda obvious who the premier college in the state is. That was all before the scandal of the century.

There is no flagship in MS technically. If we're going by colloquially, then it's State. Better academics and better sports.

Flagship means 1st founded public university in the state, people. That's all it means. Zero to do with athletics. Y'alls jr high social studies teachers suck.

Wrong answer...there is no clear and concise definition of the term.

Mississippi State has played in the SEC championship game. Ole Miss has never played in it in their school history. MSU is the flagship.

Even by a looser interpretation sports doesn't belong in the conversation.

The term "flagship university" has nothing to do with the quality of a school. It just means it is the center of a university system. For instance, the University of Tennessee is the flagship of the state system of Tennessee, with schools like UT-Chattanooga and UT-Martin as offshoots. In Alabama, the University of Alabama is the flagship with UA-Birmingham and UA-Huntsville as offshoots. So on and so forth.

Which is why Ole Miss is the flagship.

Google "flagship university in mississippi" and see what comes up.
