FWIW, I don't think they're named smokey at birth. Those are probably the years they served as our mascot, not lifespan.

Smokey is without a doubt the best looking dog in the SEC. I'm partial to hounds, but no one is close to that guy.

He is a quite handsome hound but Coonhounds in general are all around darn-good dogs. I once wrote UT asking about Smokey's background and they wrote me back, answering all my questions. The original Smokey won the honor of being Tennessee's mascot through a hound dog competition at their stadium and Smokey's "bawl" is what clenched it. He let out a big ol' bawlin' howl on that particular day that won over the crowd and Tennessee fans immediately knew he was the one.

That's a cool note. I'm like you when it comes to coonhounds. I have a 15-month-old treeing walker coonhound and before that had a beagle. Hounds are great dogs: gorgeous, smart, loyal and you don't have to worry about them biting people or other dogs. My neighbors aren't the biggest fans of the howling though.
