It seems that Kirby is entering this territory and Jimbo has definitely squandered some talent.

Kelly has had good classes, but he’s also made the playoffs a few times, so I’m not sure he belongs yet.

Who am I missing?

Almost all the other coaches besides Stoops are early into their current gig.

Not enough track record

Every Georgia coach since Dooley. Every Florida coach since Urban.

Kirby has made the playoffs twice, which is exactly the same as Kelly. And Kirby actually won a playoff game.

Matt Luke. Had a team with 16 NFL players on it, plus one potential Heisman candidate, and couldn't coach it to a .500 finish.

John L. Smith also had a season like that at Arkansas after the Petrino disaster.

interesting. It seems to me that in the short time kirby has bene a head coach his results have been commensurate with the talent he has.

Bit of a difference.

Seems like Kirby has usually had top 3 level talent where Kelly has usually been in the #10-#12 range.

ETA Not a dig at Kirby, I think he's currently the second best coach in the conference.

Obviously, there's quite a gap between one and two, but I agree.

But this is the responsibility of the head coach. It’s his job to go get talent.

I agree but in the case of BK, I think there are certain challenges to recruiting at a place like Notre Dame.

He certainly has no excuse going forward though.

Muschamp.

Look at the sheer number of high-level NFL players he had, at Florida and at SC.

And if you can't recruit at ND....Whether we agree with it or not...or like it or not...
They get the exposure(Exclusive TV contract), media hype and have a ton of history to use as a recruiting tool.

They also have an easier path to the playoffs evidenced by no championship game and no conference schedule. What little conference schedule they do play is with the ACC.

Let's not pretend that ND is a difficult gig.

I also think we can look at their performance in the playoffs to back up what I am saying.

Joe Moorhead. Guy had the #1 defense in the country and went 8-4

Nutt in 2006 and 2007. Could argue 98, 99, 02 and 03.

Spurrier. He owned the SEC but only had 1 national championship. Bobby Bowden owned him and would beat him like a rented mule.

Les Miles has to be in the discussion.

He has 1 NC and another appearance in the title game, but there were quite a few seasons where he should have at least made the SECCG and ended up with a head scratcher that knocked him out of it. And that was when Alabama was down and hadn't hired Nick Saban yet.

I know I'm older than most but Doug Barfield, that was at Auburn, had two of the best running backs in the nation in 1979. Cribbs and Brooks. And had a line backer that was All-American in Freddy Smith. And some others I cannot remember.
yet was third in conference
