Nutt was his position coach when he was on the scout team.
He gave him his chance to move up to the college ranks.
He tried to force a regime change from Nutt with him being named HC, while Arkansas's leadership was able to see through it, twice, (the second was Tim Horton, his dad, and his dad's friends trying to get him the job), Auburn bought into the plan and Gus was able to back door Chiz for the job which he took when his long awaited interview for the Arkansas job never happened.

I know it's hard for Arkansas fans to wrap their minds around this concept, for obvious reasons, but when you're the champs there is only one direction to go and the same for when you don't win a single sec game for an entire season. But you might as well use that while you can because after this year, there won't be any more excuses.

Actually explains some of the obsession Arkansas has for Auburn, whether that is true or not. Gus went on to win the SEC that year and play for a Natty, while Arkansas didn't win a single SEC game all season.
