Hopefully booking a room today. Athens is obviously booked up already so I'm looking at a few towns outside of Athens.

Here are my choices:
Commerce, Jefferson, Madison or Winder.

Which place is best to stay in? I notice all but Madison are about 20mi(30min) away. Factors include traffic time on gameday and ease of which to get to Athens on friday night.

TIA

Madison would be the most attractive place to stay of those choices. It's maybe 10 minutes farther from Athens than each of those.

On friday night each of those places would take about 20 minutes to get to Athens from. Madison would be 30. On gameday none of them will be much worse as long as you get an early start.

Thanks

I'm really excited about this game. It's easily been my favorite road trip in the SEC.

Why not stay in or near Atlanta. I don't think the drive is that bad and they have plenty of hotels. We are staying in Buckhead.

Commerce, Jefferson, and Winder are all pretty shitty towns. Especially Winder.

Just saying, don't go home and be like "Athens sucks! Georgia sucks!" just because of your stay. They are extremely small, podunk, country arse towns with little to do. Just a heads up.

Very true. Honestly I'd check out people looking to rent out their homes in Athens. It may be expensive, but if you have a large group it may not be much more than a hotel in Jefferson, Winder or wherever. That would definitely give you a more true Athens experience.

The only issue with staying outside of Athens is driving after the game. There are going to be tons of cops and roadblocks on the roads heading out of Athens. Make sure you have a designated driver! I would recommend Madison out of those options. I live in Athens and can tell you that the drive to Madison is about 40 minutes. The traffic after the game is probably going to add 20 minutes to that drive. Don't stay in Buckhead or Lawrenceville or Atlanta. It's a fairly long and stressful drive. Athens to Lawrenceville after the game will probably take around an hour and 15 minutes, Buckhead longer. Plus you would have to drive down 316 which sucks! The drive to Madison sends you down 441 which is a much more pleasant route. My second choice would be Commerce. Probably a 40 minute drive after the game. Enjoy your trip to Athens. It really is a great town!

ATL is a good place to stay if you actually plan on going out Friday night, maybe catch one of the tourist attractions, or the Falcons game the following Sunday.

However, driving from Buckhead to Athens could end up being hell if you don't leave early enough or don't know an alternate route outside of I-85 and 316.

I'd vote Madison if you want to be close to Athens. The drive on 441 North is fairly scenic and virtually traffic-less. Plus, Madison has a charm to it being so close to the rich lake country.

I lived in Milledgeville for a while and never had a problem with traffic on 441 South. Just FWIW. Never hit a roadblock either, though there are definitely cops lying in wait.

I'm not one of those people. I have been on plenty of SEC road trips to expect to be staying in a small town in a cheap hotel.

I dont want to stay in Atlanta because it's too far and gameday traffic will be turrible before and after. And the bars in Athens are the tits.

I found a place in Jefferson for 75/night and places in madison are around 115/night. I really dont care if the place is a dump, we wont be spending much time there and just want a place close and cheap.

I live in Lawrenceville and the drive on 316 really isn't bad. I enjoy it because its a straight shot just don't go more than 10 over and your fine.

It's not too bad, but there isn't much to do around there besides shop. I'd try to spend as much time in Athens as I could

As has been stated in the thread for the most part:

Try to stay in Athens if possible/spend as much time in Athens as possible

Out of the choices above, I'd say Madison is your best bet. Beautiful place with old, Antebellum style homes and a quaint little downtown area of it's own with a couple decent restaurants like the Madison Chophouse Grill

Have a sober driver if you don't stay in Athens, shower them with gifts. They are the key to the trip.

Athens is a blast, especially on game weekends, enjoy

Jefferson will be the quickest straight shot in/out of Athens, of the ones you mentioned, with the least traffic. It is also the shittiest town. Make sure your DD has cruise control and is not drunk. Georgia will execute you for DUI, they really don't frick around here.

Also, the stretch of highway between Athens and Jefferson is deer central, during the fall you will pass a dead deer and bits of broken glass every few hundred yards.

As another person said, you might want to look into VRBO in Athens, and rent a house with a bunch of buddies for the weekend because I know all the hotels are already booked. If you have enough people, it could be relatively cheap per head. And then you could all get drunk and use Athens' wonderful taxi services.
