Wonder where Auburn students got the idea? Check out the logo on the University of Alabama's 1901 football team picture.....
In the meantime, the Alabama Polytechnic Institute's (Auburn) 1900 uni's

1964 was the year we first used a "running Razorback" on our helmets. It has been tweaked a few times since then.
I'm going to go ahead and assume we probably wanted a mascot logo on our helmets because our hated rival Texas had one on their helmets starting in 1961.

Alabama's champagne elephant with the interlocking UA was used 1952-58....
Best one that everyone likes. Used from 1974-2000....
Current one used from 2004-present....

Which is correct? I see the grey tail feathers change location.
Nevermind, the grey was a visual aid.

I always wondered if Alabama copied the Atlanta Braves or vice versa. They're very close.

Bama trademarked the script A in 76 LINK. Atlanta Braves theirs in 87 LINK.
Bama "A"
and
Atlanta Braves "A"

no, we own it now

In 1964, then-Georgia football coach Vince Dooley liked the way the Packers’ helmets looked and thought it would work well for his team. Prior to 1964, Georgia had worn plain silver helmets. Georgia tweaked the logo slightly, making it shorter vertically and adding a colored stroke on the outside.

That's very cool, never heard that either. One of my son's teammates and best friends is the grandson of a guy that played for a young Dietzel at LSU, then became one of his assistants at SC. I see and talk to the old man a few times a year, he has some fascinating stories. Coach Dietzel was basically his mentor, I'll ask him about this next time we talk.

Umm, the Braves had a little layover in Milwaukee between Boston and Atlanta.

As the name evolved, so did the logo.
Nothing fancy, really.
Without bringing the "bevel vs no bevel" dispute to this forum, I prefer our vintage stuff to the current iteration.

1962-1971
1972-1980

I have no sense of visual style, but I can't tell a difference between the 01-06 and the 07-now version.

The A and the M are fatter in the current version.
