Yeah we already got the southern school in Texas by adding A&M. But it's not like Texan culture, which we'd get from UT, is that distinct.

Well blame yourself. The Big 12 was founded on unequal revenue, and remained that way because of needing 9 votes to overturn that. Texas, Oklahoma, A&M and Nebraska were the schools that voted against equal sharing.
Unequal revenue finally got voted out as a carrot to keep Missouri from leaving and Texas already had Tier 3 (LHN) and that's who pioneered the single-school networks!
Texas only uses conferences. The fairest arrangement for them in independence.
