"Steve won at Duke"

Are you aware that Duke is in the ACC?

He was 20-13-1 at Duke, with his Co-ACC Championship year concluding with an 8-4 record.

Duke's all-time record is 474-495-32.

Compare that with Kentucky (583-591-44) and Bear Bryant's record there (60-23-6) and you will see Bryant did far better at a program with similar prestige. Bryant had Kentucky in the national championship hunt in 1950. Something Spurrier never accomplished at Duke.

Steve Spurrier is a great coach, one of the best of all time in the SEC, no doubt. But if you seriously think their is even a conversation about him being better than Bryant, then you are either trolling or not to smart. By the way, I am not being a homer here, Saban is not worthy of that discussion either. Now if either of them won about 8 or 9 more SEC titles, then it might be time to compare.

Not gonna happen. Spurrier is a great coach in great shape but no way he coaches more than 5 more years. Spurriers record is very impressive and to get as close as he has during the scholarship limited period makes it even more impressive. That is a record that will probably stand forever.

At least this is a reasonable answer and actually addresses the OP. Regardless of where you'd but Spurrier on the all time SEC HC lists you know he'll finish his career in relative proximity to Bear in terms of wins, whether it's a handful more or a handful less.

What I think Spurrier has going for him is his unashamed desire to hold as many records as he can. If he can keep getting as many Ws here as he has in the last few seasons I have a hard time seeing Spurrier retire only 5-10 wins short of that record. He seems to the type to push himself just one or two more rounds for no other reason than to get that record.

If he wins a National Title at South Carolina, and comes close to Bryant in SEC wins, I'll say hes the greatest SEC coach of all time.

Championships keep the bear above spurrier.

Bryant had less games a season and did not benefit from playing cupcakes like the citadel two to three times a year.

Even if that happened he would still only have half the SEC Championships and a third the national championships of Coach Bryant

And Spurrier coached in a much tougher era than Bryant did.

South Carolina does play Clemson every year. Don't use that as an argument when Alabama plays Western Carolina's, Florida Atlantic, etc...

They play shite teams besides Clemson. So does Florida. So does everyone else in this conference. UA has not been shy in scheduling tough or supposed to be tough ooc. Not our fault some of the top 10 teams we play early fold like a cheap tent

Now? Yeah. In the 1990s while he was at Florida? No.

And Bryant would schedule teams like USC, Missouri, Nebraska, Washington and Notre Dame as regular season opponents. Sometimes he'd play two or three of them in a given year.

If Steve is still around in 7 years, will his nurse aid responsible for changing his diapers be considered part of the coaching staff? Well she or he be allowed to recruit?

We are not talking about one or two less championships here plus it is a subjective argument that no one is going to say makes a difference. As it stands now I mean SOS has a quarter the BCS championships of Saban. SOS is not going to replace CPB unless he goes on a Sabanesque tear the next five years

Spurrier is a great coach and I would even say he's a HOF coach. If the SEC keeps expanding, he may well pass Coach Bryant's SEC win record due to being able to play more SEC teams a year. I figured he likes 32 wins to match Coach Bryant's.

As for win percentage, I don't know. But Spurrier will never beat or match Coach Bryant's record for SEC championships, national championships, coach of year awards.

Bryant
160-46-9 SEC record

14 SEC titles
6 National titles (*UK claims a NC under Bryant also)
1 SWC title
14 SEC CoY awards
3 National CoY awards

323-85-17 overall record

Spurrier
128-43 SEC record

6 SEC titles
1 ACC title
1 National title
2 ACC CoY awards
7 SEC CoY awards

219-79-2 Overall record

quote:

*More than a decade after Gamage had left UK, a young man by the name of Paul "Bear" Bryant arrived on the scene at Lexington in 1946. Bryant quickly grabbed the UK program by the collar and turned the Cats into a national power.

Bryant took UK to eight consecutive winning seasons (1946-53) and helped the Wildcats claim their first national championship and Southeastern Conference championship in 1950. LINK
