I have started seeing more and more in the Mississippi area. Not flaming, every year I make an away game and each year I see more and more Crimson when I stop in Miss.

1981 when I was 5 and my dad bought me an Auburn shirt without asking which team I was "for." Didn't wear it once.

i think it could be very easily measured like this: (in no particular order)

1. do you think about your team in the off-season
2. do you have gear you like to wear every game?
3. how do you cope with losing in general?
4. how do you cope with winning in general?
5. what percentage of your team's games do you watch?
6. ......................

ok i could probably keep going on. probably easier to see what questionaire like this a potential "fan" could create. i honestly thought i could capture it in 3-4 questions.

Well this guy sat through 6 straight losses to Auburn, losing to La Tech and NIU. A 3-8 season in 2000. I was at every home game and I suffered through the fricking dark ages from 2000-2006. So you can kiss my arse.

Assuming you're speaking from personal experience, tell us someone you know that switched teams.

I own car flags for Alabama, Oregon, Georgia Southern, North Dakota State, Colorado State - Pueblo, Winston Salem State, Mount Union and Mary Hardin Baylor just so I can be sure to support a winner. I have several others in case these top tier programs lose.

"I am interested to hear the requirements to be a 'true fan' of a school."

I would say a significant amount of time (10 years or more) of support or close affiliation with the program (student, graduate, ex-player, etc.), obviously most are born into it.

tigerskin, have you ever spent any time outside of the South? I ask because I live in Oregon, and literally no one gives a damn about college football unless the Ducks or the Beavers are doing extremely well.

In Alabama, even people that don't have flags on their cars when their team isn't doing well still follow college football religiously. 99% of the people in the state either root for Alabama or Auburn. Just ask anyone you run into who they're for.

There's more to the world than Louisiana, even though I love it down there. Your worldview is lacking, and the entire subject of this post shows your ignorance.

Probably when I had an old alabama banner hung in my bedroom win I was around 3. So, 1984 I guess.

Most of us live in Alabama. 98% of this state is either an Auburn fan or an Alabama fan. That doesn't change with a good or bad season, so I can seriously tell you that I have not noticed a bunch of new Bama fans. I am sure if you live in another state in SEC country this might be different.

What is so freaking hard to understand about a fanbase being more vocal and buying more merchandise when their team is doing good? I can count on one hand the number of Auburn flags I have seen on cars after about week 4 of this season. Those frickers were everywhere two years ago.

Ok. I attended Alabama, as did my family. But my fiancee's family did not. They are Alabama fans.

Are you saying people who don't happen to attend a big time college football school aren't allowed to be college football fans? Are they supposed to just bury their heads in sand every Saturday?
