I understand people like to see things in a black/white fashion. But, I don't think Lane has been in a situation where one can truly judge his head coaching prowess.

Sunday is the 1 year anniversary of USC's 62-41 loss to Arizona State, and Kiffin was subsequently fired 6 hours later.

Point? He had a bad loss before he was fired. Please elaborate.

You said that you don't think Lane has been in a position where one could truly judge his head coaching prowess. Apparently, there was at least ONE who could, (and did) judge his head coaching prowess...and he found it to be lacking. That one would be Pat Hayden...and a year ago, that was the only person that mattered regarding judgment of Kiffin's coaching prowess. That was my point.

I'm just saying if he checks his ego at the door and learns some program mgmt from Saban

So you're suggesting that lane should take notes from saban on egos and program management.
Bc saban's success is directly related to his ego.

I mean, you don't get known as a control freak/perfectionist by standing around letting your coordinators do their thing.

I don't think your point is very powerful, seeing as you posted black and white photos..

Well the Browns and Lions are older franchises than the Raiders I'll wait while you find me a black and white or color photo of a Browns or Lions coach at a Super Bowl. Regardless, he did not say when, he said no one has ever been successful at Oakland

WTF does that have to do with anything? Couldn't stay on topic so you had to deflect? Is there some kind of moral victory you're trying to pump for preaseason rankings?

Weak.

ETA: and learn how google works. i'm sure you'll find your lil' bro question answered there.

Lane is currently better as an OC than an HC. That said, I don't think he's been as bad as an HC as some would like to paint him.

Oakland - hired at age 31 and was the youngest HC in modern NFL history. Too young for that responsibility. Not ready...and Oakland has been terrible for nearly 20 years.

Tennessee - hired at 33. Took over nightmare program that Fulmer had tanked. Had 7-6 record in only season, which was a 2 win improvement over the previous year. Two of his losses came to the #1 and #2 teams in the nation.

USC - Hired at 34. Took over program that was soon to be savaged by probation and scholarship limitations. Went 28-15 at USC.

He's 35-21 as a college HC. Never had a losing record as college HC.

Miles was 28-21 as college HC when LSU hired him. Saban was 43-26-1 when LSU hired him. Sometimes it just takes getting the right situation to prove your worth.

My point was not alot of coaches get their team to #1. preseason or during the year, its rare. Kiffin did that. how does it feel that in his first year he has a better offense then the great and mighty Gus? that must suck

Lane did an outstanding job in his one season on rocky top. His recruiting classes fell apart, but who knows how it would have turned out had he stayed

Uh no, the hype train did that.

Of course you can give Kiffin some credit since he voted them #1 (and lied about it).

First preseason #1 since 1964 to finish the season unranked.

Until Lane learns some humility and maturity, he won't be a HC any time soon.

I love how some people bring up Kiffin's lack of humility and ego while mentioning Saban in the same breath -- one of the most egotistical and arrogant coaches in the game (that's not always a bad thing).

He could have at least had the offense good enough that it didn't improve when he was fired.
