They should scrap the conference championship.

How does securing a bye and playing one less playoff game make it meaningless? This is beyond stupid.

How bout playing one less SEC game that could play you out of the field?

You have to be a conference champ to get a first round bye.

So if auburn and Alabama clinch spots in the SECCG before rivalry week, and the winner of the SECCG wins the conference but the Iron bowl has no impact on who wins the conference, will there be “opt outs” or players sitting during the Iron Bowl so they can be fresh for the SECCG?

It depends.
If second place has a 7-1 conference record but is 9-3 overall, a loss most likely eliminates them from the playoff.
So it may not be guaranteed.

Add to that the obscure tie breakers to determine participants in 16 team conference with no divisions.

I think this is going to end up being a bigger clusterfrick than most people realize. I’m not big on the idea of using CFP rankings to determine the two participants but isn’t that ultimately what you want: the 2 highest ranking? I guess a win and you’re in/lose and you’re out scenario would be ok for one of the teams if on the cusp but I don’t see it happening very often. I guess it all depends on how a conference season standings end up but I just don’t see how any tie break scenario doesn’t end up causing controversy moving forward.

An SEC title, a bye in the first round and possibly if you have more than one loss guaranteeing you a place in the playoff...because 3 are not getting in every year. Most years yes but not every year. Would 3 have gotten in this year? Most likely either Missouri or Ole Miss along with UGA and BAMA but with a committee involved who the hell knows what kind of scenario they are working toward...the one thing that won't be most years is the 12 best or the 12 most deserving but most likely the 12 who are likely to drive a narrative, whatever that may be from year to year...

when both are locks for a playoff spot next year . Same for other conferences. Will opt outs be allowed. Will starters be held out , lesser effort given, etc?

I don't think there will be many opt outs if any at all but it is entirely possible that a player who is dinged up but could go would sit just like they would in a regular season game. For example probably wouldn't see a one legged McConkey hobbling off the bench going forward. Might see one hobbling back to the bench but not off it...

Is there even a need for Conference championship games with a 12 team playoff?

Just wait til a Southern team has to travel to Salt Lake City in late December to play Utah or Madison to play Wisconsin, or any other cold weather, outdoor venue.

Yup, some programs who have never played a snow game or even extreme cold will now have to factor that in. In spite of the NFL minimizing the role of running backs, a good running game will still be essential in CFB.

Then the team that gets left out wont care because they go straight to playoffs
This is the part that will kill the CCGs. If the loser gets left out of the playoff while some other conference team(s) that sat home and didn't take another L get in the playoff.

P4 conf winners getting a bye. I have seen this discussed but have no idea if it is a real thing.

Top 4 conf chaps get the byes, so 2 SEC teams cannot get bye same year, not necessarily P4 though as there is no official "P4"

This will be very controversial as this year the highest ranked team from the 2024 big 12 was 14 Arizona, who would get the bye over a top 4 B10 (Washington) and SEC team (Bama/ Texas) add to that the bizarre seedings. 5 seed get a home game vs Liberty then AZ in the Quarters. 3 seed gets a bye but has to play Ohio State in the Quarters

For seeding and a bye obviously.

The only potential issue was brought up earlier in the thread.

If you are one of 3 teams at 11-1 and 7-1 in the conference, making the SEC game is not AS important as it was previously as you are guaranteed an at-large spot and guaranteed of playing a less number of post--season games than the loser of the SEC Championship game with more rest.

NY6 bowl game

Guessing a NY 6 will be history in the future.

4 on campus games to get it to 8 teams correct?
Back to the traditional 4 Big NY day games rotating between Rose, Sugar, Orange, Peach and Fiesta with 1 of the 5 being the CFPNCG...

Winning the conference will still matter much more than winning a non NY6 bowl game. It will also matter for seeding in the playoffs and having an easier road

The issue is there could be a scenario where the loser of the SECCG gets left out of the playoff while the second lace team in the division gets in because they don’t have to play that extra game
