He was a lazy recruiter at UF (and it usually showed against Bowden back then).

He could afford to do that at UF tho with talent all over the state. He can't afford to do that at USC. He needs to get a better recruiting coordinator so he's at least there when recruits like Chubb show up.

Bowden recruited circles around him. Spurrier only went 4-8-1 against top 10 FSU teams back then.

Oh I remember Bowden was hell on wheels on that front. FSU was stacked for a long time (seems they're like that again which to me says a lot about Muschamp). I'd forgotten the W-Ls but given how often FSU was showing up at or near the top it makes sense.

I don't think so. I think us having Mike Davis, Brandon Wilds, and then taking David Williams who may or may not have been in the same recruiting cycle as Chubb had something to do with it.

Maybe Spurrier is only interested in recruiting players that he actually believes might suit up for USC. Did you happen to catch that Arden Key recruiting fest. Shite like that is why spurrier doesn't like to get involved with recruiting unless he actually thinks a guy is coming to USC.

And the Fiesta Bowl against Nebraska.
shite like blowing a 31-3 lead in the fourth quarter or losing by 40 in the national title game. No way that would've happened under someone like Saban.

Probably not but I will say those Nebraska teams from that Era were very, very, good. Losing by 40 is probably the worst but what Oregon did to FSU this year should provide at least some solace.

But yeah, people have romanticized Spurrier a lot with the passing of years. He was exciting and loud but he was far from perfect or the way a lot of ranters seem to remember him.

Spurrier was trying to achieve a Chubb of his own. At his age that might be a feat in itself.

Not sure about Spurrier's recruiting tactics at USC, but I seem to remember that he was a little quirky about it at UF.

He basically quit recruiting Anquan Boldin to Florida because Bolden insisted on playing QB. Hell, he should've told him that he'd let him play QB like Bowden did just to get him to sign.

He wouldn't recruit Tommie Frazier either (who was local and wanted to go there).

Seems it wouldn't have taken much to stop playing golf and go recruit one the nations best future running backs. What a major league whiff.

Did someone mention 4 / 5? A lot of which was done with GA talent? (Mike Davis, Conner Shaw, etc.)

Where was Richt?

I think this is as much to do with Spurrier caring more about conference than OOC games. When he first got here he was critical of SC fans for caring so much about the Clemson game than SEC games. He lost his first 3/4 of them. We were pissed, he started talking about how maybe that game was important. We started winning.

After all, the one time UF played FSU in more than just an OOC game the Gators crushed FSU in the title game.

We would've won the first time but Spurrier was too stubborn to put Wuerffel in the shotgun. That and FSU playing dirty as hell.

I don't think any SC fan will argue that Spurrier's great weakness is stubbornness.

It's weird too. Some games you'd call him the greatest gameday coach of all time. Other games he seems so set in his plan that he just refuses to even try and change it, at least not until its too late.

I grew up in literally the same neighborhood as Tommie Frazier, I can assure you that Spurrier recruited him. So did Bowden.
