What keeps players from getting setup?

It seems like this would be more common.
Rich person A starts leaving players envelopes of cash in mailboxes or under welcome mats. Contacts them anonymously with the whole "great game today, check so and so". After a routine is established they contact the NCAA and tip it off.
Has anything like this happened before?

I've been trying to do this with ole miss envelopes for a decade, but the mailbox is always full.

What keeps the player from just saying the cash came from a relative?

Because it's all about the money. Investigators will follow the money. What does it lead to, Rich Person A who is a known booster of a rival school. Or, a money laundering operation and the FBI gets involved. Then YOUR school gets the death penalty

I have several stories I could tell... I can tell you who AU gets if you ask on NSD

Because Person A could use envelopes from a local dealership or logo of a law firm

The first time this happened, every other student would be looking under doormats every day for the whole semester

Despite 90% of the available evidence, the NCAA isn't always stupid. They're going to look into motives and relationships of tipsters, even if they're anonymous. In fact, they'll be suspicious especially if they're anonymous. You're not the first person to think along those lines, after all.

You give the NCAA too much credit there.
