Even though A&M and Arkansas had Decades where we were pretty bad (and Arkansas is still digging out from one of its worst couple of years of football) we didn't pack in a ton of losses in row for most of that because while the SWC had some fierce talent at the top of the conference the bottom feeders were really bad.

It was a sort of weird situation all around. Drew had faltered a little and resigned. But he stayed as track coach and Assistant AD. The AD was Hank Crisp who eased Drew out and hired Whitworth -- who had played at Alabama and was an asst.

One glitch was even though Alabama had struggled under Drew at the end of his tenure, all of Drew's assistant's stayed -- including Crisp who not only was AD, but line coach. (Can you imagine Saban's OL coach being the AD?)

That doesn't explain 0-10 for a minute, but Whitworth was curiously handcuffed for his tenure, too.

Messed up the years, 9-1-1 in 1965, 11-0 in 1966.

I was at the season opener in Athens in the rain when UT started their 0-6 streak in 1988. Interesting story...during their bye week UT hired a new DC (Doug Mathews) and switched from a 3-4 to a 4-3...they won 5 of their last 6 with their only loss being to Bama and went 11-1 the following season.

ETA...link to highlights of the game...and remembering that the rain stopped about when the game started.

He also coached baseball at Georgia in 1943..........and went 1-10.

Just couldn't learn could they?

Ol' Johnny pretty much threw Ken Donahue under the bus.

We were at the LSU game in Knoxville that year --rained pretty much that whole game, too.

This is why Ears Whitworth is the worst coach of all time. Bama was a GOAT before him in the 20s, 30s, and 40s

Oh come on... Bama was probably the greatest program in the South during the '20s, '30s, and 40s, but Tennessee at least should be in the discussion. But the obvious King of that era was Notre Dame. Everyone knows that.

NCAA recognized National Titles from 1920-1949:

7- Notre Dame
5- Minnesota
3- Michigan
3- California
3- Alabama
2- Army
2- USC

The Irish also claim the 1919 MNC, the year before the mentioned time frame began.

Bama was the regional power in those days.... slightly better than the other top programs in the region, Tennessee, Georgia, Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech et. al. Most of Bama's games were against these programs as well as other teams located in the South.

But Notre Dame was the big National name in college football in that day. They not only played teams in the Midwest, but ventured out to play other top tier programs from all over the country.... they played Army (from the Northeast) 28 times during these 30 years.... they played Georgia Tech (The South) 16 times during these 30 years... and they played USC (West Coast) 21 times during these 30 years.

There is no doubt the Irish were THE program of that era. No one else was close.

Donahue pretty much threw himself under the bus when he tried to start a 6'8" Redshirt Freshman at Nose (McRae went on to be a 1st round draft pick at OT).

That being said...I can't think of a single game in college football history where a DC single-handedly beat a superior opponent through scheming like Donahue did against Miami in the Sugar Bowl after the '85 season. Testaverde was on his back the entire game.

You might also mention that our 85 Sugar Bowl win over Miami prevented them from claiming at least a share of the MNC.

USM - 23 game losing streak from 2012-13 It came off the heels of a 12-2 season with a conference championship and a win in the Hawaii bowl. Went from the peak to the valley real fast.

Eh, we left the South quite a bit for Bowl Games and also for 1-2 regular season games a lot of years by the time the 30's rolled around. We just generally played Pac 12 schools and East Coast schools. We didn't play anyone from the Big Ten or the rest of the Midwest.

I don't think they would have shared it if they won...since they beat Oklahoma in week 4 and Oklahoma beat Penn State in the Orange Bowl...Miami probably would have been the outright MNC that year.

Interesting how they left that entire game out of the 30 for 30. Pussies
