I've always felt there is merit to the bowl letdown excuse. Too many times a team has had a BCS/high second-tier bowl resume only to be snubbed and gets plastered in their game.
This is magnified on teams with a lot of contributing seniors/early draft guys. If you have guys going pro playing in a game they dont give a shite about, it's a recipe for disaster.
