UGA-
Run Lindsay Run, is by far the most famous for UGA, but it's really the call more than the play.
AU- most say kick 6 or prayer at JH, but really it should be 2010 BCS NCG, the Dyer play when he kept going and everyone stopped. That set up the national title.

It all depends on how old you are, really. I mean, between the Kick 6, the Teague rundown against Miami, Green to Haynes over the Vols, Bama's goal line stand against PSU, the Bluegrass Miracle, the Punt Bama Punt blocks for returns, Prayer at Jordan-Hare, Run Lindsay Run, Clowney hit versus Michigan, Prothro's catch against...actually, I can't remember, but y'all know the one, and so forth, yadda, yadda. You can find a play for people of all ages. I wasn't alive for some of these, and have no idea how others will stand the test of time.
The reason more recent ones are more memorable isn't simply that they're more recent, but that we have much better technology, both for recording them and for disseminating them. Anyone who's watched a game from, say, 1980 on Youtube knows exactly how blurry and difficult it is to appreciate compared to modern broadcasts, so the older plays tend to get less love nowadays, which is entirely understandable.

Kick 6.
1) exciting
2) last play of the game
3) unconventional
4) two top 5 teams (1 vs 4)
5) decided who went to the SECCG
6) ultimately helped send someone to the BCSNCG
7) it was the Iron Bowl, one of the biggest rivalries in all of sports
Need I continue?

I think Prothro's catch came against Southern Miss. Can't believe I left that play off my list. One of my favorite plays of all-time.

quote:You ever heard of Charlie Flowers or Jake Gibbs? Do you know that the 21 points they scored on LSU was equal to the total # of points that Ole Miss gave up that entire year? I'd bet most Ole Miss fans around here didn't have a clue.
Yet nobody chooses to remember that. Ole Miss beat that arse in New Orleans.

It's not the most famous, but the Nick Fairley sack/fumble play in the 2010 Iron Bowl was the GOAT for me. Double teamed and just threw them back on the QB, stripped the ball, and recovered it. What an animal.

In terms of a single play, I'd replace the goalline stand with Teague's rundown strip in the 92 Sugar Bowl. But still, the kick six.
This question isn't what was the greatest play, but the most famous. Older legendary plays have the disadvantage of not being in the internet age.

The "Kick 6" will go down in history with the Cal KO return for a TD into the Stanford band and the Flutie Hail Mary as one of the most iconic plays in the history of the game. It just will.
First off, a Kick 6 probably only occurs once or twice a decade in college football.... unlike a Hail Mary that happens at least a couple times a season. Secondly, the fact that it happened in an Iron Bowl... played between two Top 5 teams both vying for a spot in the National Title. You can't write a better script.
I honestly think that play will never be topped for all of those reasons.
Prior to the Kick 6 I would have said the Cal KO return for a TD was the greatest play of all time. Again, rivalry game. And no one could ever replicate that play, especially with the band on the field, etc. But what that game lacked was national importance. Neither Cal or Stanford were in the national championship hunt that season

Yes, you could: The returner fumbles as he crosses the goalline, Bama picks it up and runs it back for a game winning touchdown, then goes on to be the first team in the modern era to win three straight national championships.
I like that script MUCH better. :)
(an alternative script would be Georgia doesn't tip the ball right into the receiver's hands the game before, sparing us the atrocity of an auburn SEC championship.)

The Goal Line Stand is the only play of those 4 choices that won a National Championship game. All 4 are very deserving, though. That Billy Cannon run was awesome.

Bama's onside kick in last year's CFNCG may be one for the ages.
