Buying a new car for a prized recruit who then drives it to SMU?
Or
Having your HC wreck the new car while drunk as it was being delivered to a prized recruit?
Any fan base with experience on the matter care to give their opinions?

No.
Aggy bought Eric Dickerson a shiny new gold Trans Am, he took it and then drove it to and during his time at SMU.
Switzer and OU were smart enough to wait until the recruit showed up to campus and enrolled to hand out the Trans Ams and 240Zs.
