What if Spurrier had stayed at Florida?

Had he never left to coach the Redskins and eventually USC. Obviously the Zook/Meyer/Muschamp years never happen. But I bet many other things would be different across the SEC. UF would probably have continued to dominate the East for most years up until his retirement. Meyer did well in his short stint but apparently the stress of real competition was too much for him and his health. Tenn/UGA would still suck and USC would be mired in total mediocrity without Spurrier's hand. But could Spurrier-led UF hold serve against Saban-led Bama? Could have been really fun to watch Bama/Aub compete against them in the SEC Championship.

Impossible to know. UGA probably has a post-Richt coaching search a lot sooner. Tennessee likely similarly unstable.

Would've made for some interesting matchups in ATL. Everyone thinks of his teams as pass-happy, offense or bust. But he put out many legit defenses too. I wonder which coach would have had to adapt more.

Maybe. But doubtful IMO. Spurrier and Meyer are cut from a different cloth. One embraces competition and gives credit where it is due. The other is a pussy.

Spurrier seemed slightly burnt out at UF when he left, which is largely why he left.

Had he stayed they would have remained good but I don't think they would have been the UF teams of the 90's.

That's fair. The magic he had in the 90s couldn't last forever. Every dynasty falls whether by wear or rust.

This is the great coach that won one damn national championship with one of the best recruiting bases in the nation and a school who would give him whatever resources he needed to compete. Meyer was more successful at Florida in his short stint that Spurrier ever was.

Meyer had the advantage of playing against a weak East and a diluted FSU. I'd bet that Spurrier would have brought at least 1 more NC to them than the Zook/Meyer/Muschamp days. He's their GOAT but he could have been more.

That's a very common misconception. His best offenses could run the hell out of the ball too. Errict Rhett, Fred Taylor, and Earnest Graham were all extremely productive backs at Florida under Spurrier. His philosophy of throw to get the lead and run to keep it worked so well there.

Yes but the only teams Spurrier faced were Alabama in the sec cg and Tennessee. Meyer had to contend with LSU and a Mark richt led Georgia team. I could make an argument that Meyer had to contend against a stronger sec conference than Spurrier plus they had a guaranteed west victory over LSU at that time.

He faced a dominant FSU when he was there. Bowden dropped off over time and Spurrier could have capitalized had he stayed. He would have had to deal with a stronger West though.

Clowney doesn't go to South Carolina. Maybe Clemson, Georgia, or Bama?

This is always interesting to consider but as stated by some other posts, by the end of his time at UF coach Spurrier was burning out, bored with the same speeches to the the same Gator clubs and more than anything tired of the unreal expectations of some spoiled Gator fans that expected UF to go undefeated every year and win the Natty. I truly believe that the fans ran Spurrier away more than anything else, although 5 million a year was also a consideration in the decision to leave. The question as to the success he might have had if he stayed would be whether he could have re-lit the fire.

False, the only reason Meyer had a chance to be successful is because of what Spurrier did at UF.

I like Spurrier a lot more now that he is retired. He was never my kind of coach but I appreciate what he did at Florida. He didn't like that Foley wouldn't take his side on the FSU late hitting argument and thought UF fans were getting spoiled. I guess he wasn't aware that there were two other programs in the state of Florida that also came of age at the same time which he had a hard time beating. What Fla fans wanted was not unrealistic. I do appreciate that Spurrier was honest and ran a clean program unlike FSU and Miami.
